We offer safe, legal options for selling your car, getting the most for it, and protecting yourself from scams like FLOATING TITLES.

Ask someone selling a car on Facebook if the title is in their name. Many sellers will ghost you. “Floating Titles” are ramped in Southern California because of so many shady car flippers.

“Floating Titles” or “Title Jumping” is when someone buys your car and keeps it in your name. To drive themselves or resell it. They can renew the registration from a kiosk.

Why?

They don’t have a driver’s license.

They are here illegally.

They don’t want their criminal record attached to their license plate. They’d rather have yours.

Another reason: Honest people will list cars for sale with problems. “It runs great most of the time, but mechanic says it needs a new engine soon. So, it’s dirt cheap.”

Floaters will buy the car, relist it as perfect condition, then sell it pretending to be you or a family member. “That’s me on the title. I already signed it.”

Weeks later someone is tracking you down for lying to them.

Months, or years later, you find out it’s been in an accident and they want your insurance info. The car was used to get a cash loan and you have a repo on your credit report. Or the car was used to commit a crime.

Always keep your proof of sale paperwork. Always report the sale to the DMV and keep a printed copy forever.

Feel free to reach out to Chris with any question. If we can’t help you, our advice is free.

Beware of Title Floating. When someone buys your car and keeps it registered in your name. Always buy from a licensed buyer like ANCC Auto Buyers.

If the seller's name differs from what's listed on the vehicle title, be on high alert for title jumping activity.

Beware of scams!!!!! We see this a few times a year when selling cars. If they try this on dealers, they'll try it on anyone. They come look at your car. While you are not looking, they unplug the solenoid or throttle wire. Then as we go on a test drive, the check engine light comes on. They throw a fit then demand a better price. Now you have to have the car 100% re-inspected to make sure they didn't do anything else.
We've caught someone pouring creamer in the motor oil at an auto auction. To make it look like it needs a new head gasket or engine.
They teach their little kids to distract you. The kids will go into your garage or run into your house or back yard. Start messing with the car, or anything on your property. So you're always focused on these out of control kids.
If your hood is open, you don't take your eyes off the engine for any reason. That is why there is ALWAYS at least 2 of us when buying or selling a car.

Officials and a victim are warning San Diegans about a growing scam that targets people who are selling their cars.
