Project Zelda: Porsche GT4

Project Zelda: Porsche GT4 Is there still a place for old school products and techniques in the modern age of high tech auto detailing? We aim to find the best of both worlds.

Yesterday, Afred, Steve Hoffman (the National Tech Chairman for the Porsche Club of America) and I paid a visit to Corey at the headquarters of CarPro-USA. Corey was an outstanding host and is an all around great guy.

Corey took time from his busy schedule to give us a detailed overview of CarPro products and his entry into the world of auto detailing product development and distribution. Corey is an avid car guy who like myself and Alfred would seek out new products as they became available. It was clear however that Corey took this interest a step further and sought answers to the fundamental questions of why certain products worked and others didn't. Corey turned this deeper questioning and need for understanding into a career with CarPro and as a result we all reap the benefits.

If you go to CarPro-USA's site the range and depth of the product line can be a bit difficult to come to terms with at first. Like many companies the basics of both exterior and interior car care are all covered but it's the method and philosophy behind the Car-Pro approach that is unique and takes a bit of understanding to become familiar with. Car-Pro USA also carries other product lines and interestingly these are some of the more famous high-end lines many of us would be familiar with and are top shelf products in their own right.

Corey explained the Car-Pro approach very clearly and as he did it was apparent that a lot of thought and testing has gone into it. In fact testing and improvement is a constant aspect of the business for Corey. I won't take the time to describe all the product line now. There will be time for that later as we get in to the details of the project. Friday was primarily about the consideration of just one product Car-Pro's CQuartz Finest.

Rather than list all of the advantages of CQuartz Finest right here you can find a good summary at the following link:

http://www.cqfinest.com/about/

If Project Zelda was going to go the coating route (and by now we had gathered enough information to determine that would indeed be the way to go) CQuartz Finest would be the coating of choice. Corey gave us details on the chemistry behind the way the coating worked and the process required for application.

CarPro takes the reputation of Finest very seriously and is understandably protective of the name. As a result only certified installers are allowed to apply it. This selection process ensures that any vehicle that it is applied to will be properly prepared by both decontaminating and polishing and that the coating itself will be properly applied and cured. While none of these steps in and of themselves may be inherently difficult the experience, skill and attention to detail of the installer is critical in order to obtain the highest level result. We also determined that based on real world experience it also makes sense to apply CQuartz Finest over the PPF as well. This presented the team with a big dilemma. Since PPF was to be applied by Auto Paint Guard in Tampa simple logistics dictated that the CQuartz Finest would also need to be applied there as well. This meant a complete re-evaluation of our plans and sad faces all around....

Big news and big updates for this week. Product selection, schedule and logistics have caused me to make some hard choices in order to do what both makes the most sense and as a result is likely also best for Project Zelda.

From the start, this project has been an attempt to develop a collaboration of the finest expertise and talent available from within the detailing and paint protection industry in the state of Florida. Even before the project began I knew that Auto Paint Guard Inc. in Tampa would be responsible for the PPF installation. They are simply the best in Florida. So a trip to Tampa for that work was the first anchor for the project.

The big unknown was what route would the final paint protection and preservation take? Would we go old school with waxes, or perhaps use more modern sealants or instead would we take the big plunge into the world of high technology ceramic coatings. I admit that both Alfred Marino and I were cautious above going the coating route. We have a long history of knowing what works for us and we have also seen many fads and trends that promised miracle results quickly go the wayside. However, the more we delved into the current state of coating technology the more the consensus was that the high tech coating phenomena was here to stay and should be a serious contender in our final decision. In fact if the ultimate in paint protection, durability and minimal maintenance were our requirements, and they were it should be game over. However, we still had some questions and concerns.

Since we won't start on the formal detailing until next week I decided to give Zelda a quick light wash and install all the accessories I had been gathering over the past several weeks. I also put on the Weltmeister 2015 sticker today.

So some thoughts and observations from yesterdays delivery. First I was pleasantly surprised that Zelda was transported from the port of Jacksonville to Porsche of Melbourne by Reliable Carriers Inc.

Enclosed transport by Reliable. It doesn't get muck better than that.

The car arrived in excellent shape and I was able to remove the protective film, quality stickers, seat covers, door panel covers and steering wheel cover myself and save what I wanted for posterity or future use. The steering wheel cover and seat covers will come in handy later on I am sure.

The only dirty spot on the car was behind the drivers side door below the hatch. As the picture shows even that wasn't a problem
