Purdue Boilermakers (What If?)

This one was a little different from my usual builds. For the first time, I stepped away from recreating a real hydroplane and built/painted one that never actually existed.

Lisa asked me if I could take inspiration from a photo that Jeff Ayler created and make a Purdue branded model for her husband, who is a 1982 Alumni. It was a fun change of pace to be creative instead of trying to match every historical detail.

Using a black-base is enough to scare any crew member away from being on the deck, but it always looks so good. The contrast of the gold and white mellow it out a touch, but still has that aggressive ready to “Boiler Up” feel. I have to admit, I really enjoyed bringing this “what if?” boat to life.

1964 Miss Exide

Originally running as the Miss Wahoo, this hull was purchased by Milo and Glen Stoen and rebuilt as the Miss Exide for the 1964 season. Driven by Bill Brow, the boat was highly competitive all year. The team captured the Diamond Cup in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and secured a second-place finish in Seattle after a tight battle that resulted in a point tie with the Miss Bardahl.

The hull raced for two seasons under the Miss Exide banner before being purchased by Bernie Little ahead of the 1966 season to become the next Miss Budweiser. However, the hull met a tragic end that same year at the President’s Cup in Washington, D.C. It was completely destroyed in a violent collision with the Notre Dame, a horrific accident that claimed the lives of both Rex Manchester and Don Wilson.

I don’t get to do 50’s and 60’s round noses that often, but when I do I think they always turn out pretty nice. I really love the color combination on this one in particular with the contrast of the aggressive red and white lightning bolts with the calm light blue. Somehow it just works and really looked great back in the day.

1984 Tosti Asti

This hull wore a number of great paint schemes over the years, including Miss 7-Eleven, Cellular One, Vantage Ultra, Winston Eagle, and Tosti Asti. While I think they’re all memorable, this was one of the most underrated schemes of the era in my opinion.

Although the boat enjoyed a successful run through the 1980s, including a World Championship in 1984 and various other wins under these sponsorships, it ultimately served as a stepping stone for owner Steve Woomer. The experience and foundation built with this hull helped pave the way for the success they achieved in the 1990s after acquiring the Circus Circus inventory.

2026 ROYER - Miss Madison

Hanson Hydros and Miss Madison Racing have partnered up together to offer this one of a kind model for the 2026 Madison Regatta as a raffle! This model is very special as it is and will always be a ONE of ONE. That means a 2026 Miss Madison will not be made by me ever again so this is your chance if you have inquired about one or have been waiting! All of the proceeds from this raffle will be going to the Miss Madison Racing Team so even if you don’t win, you’re supporting the longest running team in unlimited history!

Not only is it a one of one, but the entire 2025/2026 crew has signed the box I provide for it, along with Brandon Kennedy signing the bottom of the model. Look for me at the Boats at the Barn this weekend in Hanover as I’ll have a table with this model on display, along with others I have made.

RAFFLE INFO:
The model and others will be displayed at the Miss Madison merchandise table during the regatta weekend, that is where tickets can be bought. The raffle will close at 2PM Sunday the 5th, and the drawing will be made before the final heat that same day!
One ticket is $5 or
Five tickets for $20.
Cash only, and you can buy as many tickets as you want!

ABSENTEE OPTION:
If you are not at the regatta (you really should be) you can purchase tickets until next Wednesday, July 1st, through myself by sending me a message directly and I’ll give you the payment information. Once payment is received you’ll get pictures of your ticket numbers.

As one of the most anticipated builds so far for both my followers and myself, WOW do I love how it turned out! I’m very excited for this partnership, and hope to see you at the race!

Propwalkers JPG Race #3

This Saturday (June 27th) head on out to Krueger Lake at the Proving Grounds in Madison to watch some RC boat action! It’s free to the public so come out and watch as long as you like, we’ll be there from 9am-3pm. Enjoy some model racing a week before the real thing!

As many of you know I am slightly obsessed with this sport, so along with making my models, and crewing on the Miss Madison, I also have a 1/8 scale Miss Budweiser. Come out and say hi! I’ll also have a couple “Hanson Hydros” with me for anyone who would like to see them in person!

For the past 5 years the Miss Budweiser seemed unstoppable, but the teams dominance finally showed signs of vulnerability. The rise of PICO American Dream and the consistently fast Smokin’ Joe’s created one of the most competitive seasons in years, making the Miss Budweiser ultimately lose the championship in 1996

While the top three were the ones battling for the championship, the 4th and 5th place boats (DeWalt-Miss Madison and Harvey Motorsports)
had deck to deck races all year long and had amazing results as well.

I love showing off season lineups, as they always compliment each other so well. One thing no one can deny, is the 90’s definitely had some of the best sponsorships!
