This is very true! The other very common issue is that the thinner elements in the fluid evaporate through the vents in the transmission over time so that what's left is thicker, burnt fluid and the fluid level is way too low. It's very common for us to find that the fluid level is usually 1 and 1/2 quarts low when we service a "sealed for life" transmission! (We always measure what is drained out to check). We only use the manufacturer's OEM fluid when we service transmissions! (Although Amsoil makes great products- just pricey)

A timing belt replacement on a 2001 VW Passat. The (original) belt was very stretched and the hydraulic tensioner was leaking fluid. The customer came in for an A/C problem and didn't know about the belt or the engine damage that would result if it broke or jumped time (would have probably totaled the car). We know where to focus your money and what work can wait! We did fix the A/C problem btw.

2 Subarus we've been servicing for years. These are the actual odometer readings as of today! The 2010 Forester is catching up to the 1997 Outback but the Outback has some travelling scheduled for later this summer!

This is an invoice from a customer that normally drives from Washington DC to our shop here in Luray to get his car worked on because he trusts us and loves our prices. He needed a headlight bulb replaced so he popped in to a local garage. He left owing $1,532.70. In our opinion, none of this work needed to be done according the current mileage on the vehicle with the exception of the $43.13 oil change. If we feel a customer actually needs these services our price is approximately 1/3 of what they charged. In addition, they replaced his Interstate battery that we just installed last year with a new Interstate battery at full price even though it was covered under warranty if, in fact, it was actually bad. As an Interstate dealer they should have replaced it under warranty. Beware of unscrupulous garages who try to up-sell you on "services" when you go in for something simple. If we recommend a service to you, feel free to ask as many questions as you want, check the owner's manual to see if it's recommended by the manufacturer and google it to see what others have to say. We will never risk our hard-earned reputation to try to sell you something you don't need.
