A fond farewell to the flamboyant master of Rock 'n Roll, an inventor of the form, and a man who practically created the very idea of stage presence, Mr. Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman) of Macon Georgia, who died today at the age of 87 in Nashville, Tennessee.
He was born in 1932, and his development as a performer and musician grew out of the Gospel tradition. Little Richard was the first gender-bending rock 'n roller, and he was quite the showman!
Without him, Visceral Volume Radio likely wouldn't exist, and neither would the bands I have played in (or at least these things would have been a lot less exciting). There would be no Jimi Hendrix, no Bob Dylan, no Black Flag, no Soundgarden, no Melvins, no Divine, no Teri Gender Bender an Le Butcherettes, no PJ Harvey, no Nick Cave, no METZ, no Johnny Rotten (Lydon), no Jon Spencer, no Rolling Stones, no Babes in Toyland, no Beth Ditto, no L7, no Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, no Fishbone, no Cramps... as we know them all today without the man who came to be known as Little Richard!

So put on his 1957 debut "Here's Little Richard", crank it up and play your instrument with one hand under leg!
I'll be shimmyin' 'round my living room to this live splendor:
