Believe it or not, school starts in less than a month — August 6th, 2025.

We know some kids are groaning and some parents are quietly fist-pumping, but ready or not, the first day of school is just around the corner.

As we get back into the swing of early mornings, packed lunches, and school drop-off lines, we want to remind everyone that school zone speed enforcement cameras will be active across the county starting August 6th.

There will be a warning period for about a week and a half. During this time, drivers caught speeding will receive warnings — no fines, just a friendly reminder to slow down. But starting August 18th, the cameras will begin issuing real summonses, so now’s the time to check that speedometer.

We’re committed to keeping our school zones safe for students, teachers, and families. Please help us by slowing down and staying alert.

Change in Seat Belt Law July 2025

Every year, the Virginia General Assembly convenes to review and pass hundreds of bills, many of which are then sent to the Governor of Virginia for approval. It is essential for law enforcement to stay informed about these bills, as many impact the Virginia Code by amending or changing the language of laws we enforce regularly.

For example, HB2475 (Keys-Gamarra) amends the seat belt law to require all passengers in a motor vehicle to wear seat belts. Although this amendment does not go into effect until July 1, 2025, we strongly encourage every passenger to buckle up now to help ensure the safety of everyone in the vehicle.

🚗Uninsured Motorist Fee Ends 🚙

Effective July 1st, 2024, the $500 Uninsured Motorist Fee is no longer an option for Virginia Drivers. All registered vehicles must carry the state minimum liability insurance coverage. Something we see quite often is people’s license suspended for “Insurance Monitoring” by DMV. Commonly it is from a vehicle that is not on the road (mechanical issues, wrecked, restoration project, etc.) but is still registered. If a vehicle has an active Virginia registration, insurance is required. DMV may suspend your license if it is found not to have insurance on the vehicle. We recommend you reach out to your insurance provider and ensure that you have at least the minimum insurance required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you get a document from DMV requesting proof of insurance, it must be returned within 30 days. Lastly, it is the operator that is charged if the vehicle is not insured, so if you are driving someone else’s car please make sure it is insured!
