Unfortunately sometimes we have to give bad news. In this case we have a Jetta GLI that lost a timing chain at 110k miles. They typically don’t fail till a bit later in mileage but it just goes to show that the 10k service intervals cause premature wear especially on chain sets. Although common on this engine they typically don’t have to be replaced until 120-150k.

This case was much worse than others as it was run low on oil, the chain tensioner is hydraulic and let go causing the chain to slip on the cassette causing major valve damage and loss of compression. To make a bad situation worse, when we pulled the filter to see the oil we found it to have more glitter than a glitter bomb. Oil was contaminated with rod bearing material. Sadly the best course of action on this one is a new engine due to the customer being unsure of how long it was run with no oil prior to this issue.

For all VW/Audi 1.8 and 2.0 turbo engines it is always recommended to do 5k service intervals which help extend the life of the chain sets. At 100k it is always recommended to pull the inspection plug to see where the tensioner is on its life to avoid similar issues like these.

When the tensioner hits its 5th tooth it is time for replacement before bad things happen.
