Getting mixed up with your horsepower, torque, and powertrain?
Learning vehicle vocabulary can be like speaking a whole new language, so allow us to clear up a few key terms:
-Undercarriage: This is the framework on the underside of a vehicle. It carries the various powertrain and suspension components.
-Powertrain: A system of parts that create and deliver power throughout the vehicle. These parts include the engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential, and axles.
-Horsepower: This is the amount of energy produced by the engine.
-Torque: A twisting force produced by the engine. It measures the strength of the engine and the time it takes to transfer power to the wheels.
-Spark Plug: This is what ignites the combustion when you turn the key in the ignition. It powers the engine and gets the vehicle running.
-Auto Hesitation: A temporary loss of power — usually occurs when the vehicle isn’t accelerating as quickly or as smoothly as it should.
-Rough Idle: Occurs when the vehicle’s engine shakes, vibrates, or rattles while it’s running with no pressure on the gas pedal.
-Flooded Engine: This occurs when excess fuel floods the cylinders. It makes it difficult (or impossible) to start the vehicle.
After learning these phrases, you’ll be ready to converse about cars with confidence — and your mechanic will appreciate it :)
