In honor of Memorial Weekend, I’m taking it back old school to the good days at Lee County Dragway and our annual Spring Festival we held every Memorial weekend. So many memories, so many laughs, and yes… usually plenty of rain too. I’m talking every year rain. Rain, Rain, Rain 🌧️Those weekends were filled with racing, friends, family, hard work, and moments we’ll never forget.
A special thank you to our announcer, Mike Shea, for this wonderful and hilarious story that brings all those memories rushing back again. Mike Shea: DB: For the record here goes. It was Memorial Day Weekend with the three shows, Saturday night, Sunday and Monday afternoons. I think it was Monday when I was told to announce we had run out of hamburgers, but we would be back in business shortly. So, being the only child I am with the imagination God gave me, I opened the mic to begin telling the story just as Jerry Saar walked into the control booth in the tower. And I said something like. "Ladies and Gentlemen: I need to let you know that we have run out of hamburgers. Now I know what you are thinking, 'How in the world can they run out of hamburgers on Memorial Day Weekend when they KNOW the crowd is doing to be big?' So I need to explain, we are not actually out of ground beef, but our production line has broken down. Three ladies work as a team to prepare the hamburgers. The first lady has just the right size hands to scoop up the exact amount of ground beef needed for one patty and one sandwich. She flips those scoops to the second lady whose arm-pits are the exact size and shape to form the ground beef into the perfect patty and then passes them on to the lady who actually cooks them. Our problem is the lady in the middle has suffered frost bite in her arm pits and has been taken to the hospital. Word is she's doing fine and will be back on the production line shortly; please be patient. Thank you" When I then looked, Jerry had fallen down on the couch we had up there, laughing almost uncontrollably, and when he could talk said something like, "Only you could come up with something like that." Great memories and I miss those days!
