Paint Correction Explained (1-Step, 2-Step, and 3-Step)
Paint correction is the process of removing imperfections from a vehicle’s clear coat, such as swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, holograms, and other defects, through machine polishing.
1-Step Paint Correction
A 1-step correction is designed to improve the paint while balancing results and cost.
Process:
* Paint decontamination (clay bar and iron remover)
* Single polishing step using a polish and pad combination
* Removes light swirls, haze, and minor imperfections
Results:
* Typically removes 50–70% of defects
* Increases gloss, clarity, and depth
* Best for newer or well-maintained vehicles
Ideal for:
* Daily drivers
* Vehicles with light swirl marks

2-Step Paint Correction
A 2-step correction focuses on achieving a significantly higher level of defect removal.
Process:
1. Heavy cutting compound and aggressive pad to remove defects
2. Finishing polish and softer pad to refine the paint and maximize gloss

* Eliminates most swirl marks, oxidation, and moderate scratches
* Produces a deep, mirror-like finish

3-Step Paint Correction
A 3-step correction is the most extensive paint restoration process.
Process:
1. Heavy cut compound to remove severe defects
2. Intermediate polish to refine the finish
3. Ultra-fine finishing polish to jewel the paint for maximum gloss and clarity

* Removes 90–95%+ of paint defects (when safely possible)
* Maximizes depth, gloss, and reflection

Important Note
Not every scratch can be safely removed. Paint thickness is measured throughout the process, and deep scratches that extend beyond the clear coat may only be reduced rather than completely eliminated. The goal is always to achieve the best possible results while preserving the long-term integrity of the paint.
