1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe by Jonckheere, famously known as the "Round Door" Rolls-Royce.
The History of the "Round Door" Rolls-Royce
β’ The Origin: The car originally left the factory in 1925 as a standard Hooper-bodied Cabriolet. It was delivered to its first owner, Hugh Dileman of the United States.
β’ The Re-body: In the early 1930s, the car made its way to Belgium, where the coachbuilding firm Jonckheere stripped its original body. They crafted this incredible, bespoke Art Deco masterpiece featuring its signature perfectly circular doors, crescent-shaped windows, dual sunroofs, and a massive finned tail sweeping off the back.
β’ The Color Evolution: While the car is famously finished in black today, it went through several transformations over its lifetime. In the 1950s, a subsequent owner painted it entirely gold and charged spectators $1.00 to see it. By the late 1980s, it was painted all-white with wide whitewall tires, which is the exact historic era and configuration depicted in your photo.
β’ Current Status: The vehicle was later acquired by the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The museum completely restored it back to a stunning gloss black finish, and it remains one of the crown jewels of their collection today.
