More rain and freezing conditions expected tonight & tomorrow
Ice could form in north, heavy rain in the southeast
Forecasts of freezing temperatures and new precipitation could cause new ice and refreeze of wet roads overnight and into tomorrow, mostly in the north and central counties of Missouri. MoDOT is told communities near the Iowa state line can expect snow as well.
Predicitions of snow and ice peak for the northeastern corner of the state. That is also where the most impact from occasionally gusty conditions are expected. Northwest winds are forecasted at a steady 15-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Drivers of high profile vehicles, especially those carrying no or lightweight loads, are advised to take extra care.
In the southeast, up to two inches of rain is expected to fall in the Bootheel region. Avoid low-lying areas and be prepared to move quickly if flash flood warnings are issued.
Do not expect to run at the speed limit on highways north of I-70, and those in a triangle from Kansas City to Columbia to the Lake of the Ozarks region. Speed limits are set for movement in ideal conditions. Tonight, conditions will not be ideal.
Plan to leave the highway for a warm, safe parking location at the first indication of icy roads. Remember, it is not just your load and your safety at risk, emergency services personnel have been seriously injured this winter while responding to calls.

TRAFFIC ALERT
Icy Roads Forecasted for North Texas, Oklahoma, Eastern Kansas and Missouri
In the late night tonight and the early hours of Thursday, February 22, another round of winter precipitation is expected in Missouri. Ice is also predicted for northern Texas, Oklahoma and eastern Kansas.
It appears that in Missouri, areas north of Interstate 70 will take the brunt, but it doesn't take much ice to make travel hazardous.
After a short break, MoDOT emergency crews are back in action as freezing rain started falling in southwest Missouri within the last hour or so. Snowfighters will be back in action as conditions merit throughout the state.
Please pay close attention to local forecasts, electronic message boards and tools such as the MoDOT Traveler Information Map and/or free map app to know what's coming your way.

A Fast-Moving Cold Front Makes Travel Challenging in Missouri
By 2 pm, Thursday, January 11, a quick-moving cold front had made it's way from Northern to Central Missouri and wintry mix is covering roads in the extreme northwest and northern areas of the state. Black ice is a concern where freezing temperatures meet wet pavement. The front will continue moving south/southeast through the evening, bringing temperatures down by about 20 degrees in a matter of an hour or so.
We're told to expect 30 mph gusts from the northwest through the evening in the north. Those traveling I-70 and parts south will continue to fight winds through tomorrow morning.
Southeast Missouri will be the last to experience the quick temperature drop. Instead of the wintry mix other areas receive, forecasters call for ice. In extreme SE Mo., we're told there could be a quarter-inch of ice by the time the disturbance ends. Be EXTRA CAREFUL if traveling I-55 and other highways in the area.
Take care when driving AND when exiting and walking around your truck. As they report to equipment sheds, our crews are reminding each other to be mindful of slip hazards - they want to pass that message to professional drivers, too. Take care when entering and exiting the cab and on pavement that might be glazed.
