Our guest, John, and his three buds rolled into camp this weekend and shared some bike pics with us.

They’re from Odessa, Texas, headed for Chattanooga. Four big bikes. Four badass riders. Enough gear to survive just about anything.

Reading some driver comments on a recent tragedy got our knickers in a twist. The motorcycle community doesn’t need lectures from people who don’t understand it. We need the same thing everyone else does: fairness, respect, and a little common sense.

We ride because we love it. We watch out for each other. We support local businesses. We raise money for charities. We mentor new riders. We build friendships that last a lifetime.

And when a rider goes down, we don’t see a headline. We see one of our own.

Posting that you “had your cruise on 45 mph” doesn’t make you right and us wrong. Driving a Camry doesn’t make you the good guy. Lifting your F-150 four inches doesn’t mean it owns the road.

Ever since you were a kid, on your way to the beach, you’ve seen the sign: “GO TO CHURCH OR THE DEVIL WILL GET YOU.” It’s on the side of Highway 65, about halfway to the Gulf. Or about halfway home. Either way, it always felt good to see it there.

The original sign was erected in 1988 by W.S. “Billy” Newell. He said that the message came from something his mother told him throughout his childhood: “Go to church or the devil will get you.” So, what started as a personal reminder became one of the most recognizable roadside attractions in Alabama. Over the years, millions of travelers have passed by it, and its became woven into Alabama folklore.

Our shirt is just a nod to a piece of Alabama history and to those of us who grew up seeing it every summer. We’re getting ready to fill another order so if you’d like one, send us a private message and we’ll get you taken care of.

UCLA professor, Dr. Don A Vaughan, completed a neuroscience study on motorcycle riding. He and his team of researchers hooked riders up to monitors and compared riding a motorcycle to driving a car and sitting still.

But to summarize…

• Stress levels dropped by almost 30% after riding

• Focus and alertness increased

• Riders showed signs of being in a “flow state”

• Brain activity looked similar to mindfulness and light exercise combined

The study found that riding forces your brain into the present moment. You’re focused on the road, the curves, the traffic, the sound of the engine, and everything happening around you. There’s not much room left in your head for work stress, bills, or all the other noise life throws at you.

It’s why a long ride can clear your head better than sitting on a couch or in a cage.
