We met Eric Hendrikx, author of MOTORCYCLE LIFE (and with Rolling Stones), at a nearly rained out Isle of Triumph during the Vintage Fest. We had lots of time to talk about motorcycles, motorcycle camping, and the people he met while writing his book.

Eric’s book features photographs and personal accounts from more than 100 riders, including builders, racers, collectors, and familiar names such as Keanu Reeves, Jason Momoa, and Norman Reedus.

The Wild One taught America two things: motorcycles make you look dangerous, and taking your ol lady motorcycle camping is very cool.

Bikes, camping, and “romantic decisions”. They had the formula figured out in 1953 and we’re proud to uphold the tradition.

Comic books have been putting their toughest characters on motorcycles for decades, and we know why.

The motorcycle already had a reputation before comics fully adopted it. By the middle of the 20th century, motorcycles had become associated with racers, veterans, outlaw clubs, stunt riders and people who generally preferred independence over convention. Film helped reinforce the image, particularly after The Wild One in 1953. And comics took note.

Ghost Rider debuted in 1972 as Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt rider whose machine became inseparable from the character. Judge Dredd later got the Lawmaster. Kaneda’s red motorcycle became one of the defining images of Akira. Lobo rides one through space. Wolverine, Batman and Captain America all spend time on two wheels.

They’re more physical, more exposed and less civilized than they would sitting inside a cage.

Comics have spent decades inventing increasingly elaborate weapons, vehicles and technology, but when they want someone to look genuinely tough, they keep coming back to one of the simplest machines they have.
