Sometimes I sit back and feel pretty proud of how far the INS has come. Other times I realize that my lack of optimism towards how many of these I was actually going to make is a small, slightly comical, problem.

We’ve reached one byte (255) worth of units and I’m out of space!

V3 INS in-house marking process finally looks good enough. Went through a bit of a journey to get to this point, but I’m happy enough with these.

If you recently purchased a V3 IMU or INS and noticed they were devoid of markings, please feel free to send the sensor back to me and I’d be happy to laser them for you. Email me. [email protected]

Happy Sunday.

I’m real proud to have watched over the powertrain and systems on this car since 2019. Today at Pikes Peak Int'l Hill Climb it reclaimed its title of the fastest Porsche ever to climb that hill. (Also won the Pikes Peak Open class, was 6th overall, and was the fastest unibody car on the day). It also goes without saying, a really (!) impressive drive from PPIHC rookie (!) Billy Johnson.

It recently changed hands from the previous owners to a no-bullsh*t IMSA team in Alegra Motorsports who set their sights on getting this car back in to action and achieving results. Alegra put in a ton of work to get it back in to fighting shape after it was sitting for quite awhile.

If it weren’t for the trailblazing work and support from BBI Autosport this achievement straight up would never have been possible. The engine ran flawlessly and is a real testament to not only BBI but the BBI Turbo Cup formula as a whole.

Long live the Turbo Cup. Long live fast Porsche’s driving up hills. Long live friends doing cool stuff.

Short INS Pro update about RTK corrections on easy mode with the VBOX NTRIP Modem, and a simple demo of a really low noise and high accuracy accelerometer.

First photo is live data from the INS Pro. Note the “tall and skinny” distributions. Second photo is live data from the regular IMU. Note the “wider and shorter” distributions. Tall and skinny == low noise, wider and shorter == more noise. It should be said also, that a normal simple IMU will have a *MUCH* wider distribution than even my IMU, which would indicate much more random noise.

This INS Pro combo with RTK should yield 1-3cm global positioning accuracy anywhere in the lower 48 states! Real neat! Going to do a PCB revision here soon, then I’ll actually be able to sell these. Not for everyone, but hopefully it’ll help with some folks with vehicle dynamics work!

V3 INS, IMU, INSD, GPS (…new and coming soon) is looking real swell!

V3 features:
- Ultra rugged “marine” potting optional
- Rearward connector available in Deutsch ASL 5-way or optional Sourieau 9-way to allow for advanced tuning or development firmware access
- RS232 GPGGA / GPRMC output to integrate with legacy serial protocols
- More extensive power protection circuits (internal short protection and reverse polarity protection)
- Better heat dissipation for the main processor to manage prolonged high temperatures
- Same enclosure for INS, IMU, INSD, and GPS (this is more for my sake, but still)

More info soon!

I love drag racing. It's pretty cool to boil down the performance / racing problem to "how much power can I apply, how soon, and for how long". You get to also avoid the complexities of other types of racing and just focus on the core thing of how you get a big chunk of mass from one point to another as quickly as possible.

Over the years I've seen a lot of *really* smart people, do *really* smart things with less than ideal tech.

You know what I'm talking about. Yeah *you*. I'm talking about using timers as the backbone of control strategies for drag racing.

It's 2026. You can use an Obsidian INS and add or remove power based on distance.

What's notable here about these two logs (that you're probably trying to squint at on your phone) is that the Speed, Distance, and Time are all generated *automatically, without a start trigger* from an Obsidian INS.

I did a little math here to calculate the errors from the time slips (from the track) after accounting for a rollout distance of 12". Two different runs with a max total deviation of +27.5ms to -19ms [milliseconds]. I even suspect that there is a way to improve that accuracy, but more on that later.

You may notice here that I'm calculating the split times here (see `ins_x_time`) in MoTeC i2. However, there's good news for you since you made it this far. As of INS Version 60, you will now be able to receive these split times and speeds and have a user configurable rollout distance.

So, go drag race, get an INS, do something sporty with it! Thanks for the data and slips !
