What does a half-day boat rental near Lake Travis actually cost?

The honest answer is that the quoted rate is rarely the total.

The half-day price is where the number starts. Six things commonly sit on top of it, and they are where quotes stop being comparable:

Fuel, usually billed when you return the boat. A captain fee, if you book captained. A security deposit, held and refunded. Gratuity, especially on captained trips. A cleaning fee. A late return charge, often steeper than the hourly rate.

It is also worth asking what "half day" means. Four hours typically includes the time it takes to get to and from wherever you want to spend the day. If the clock starts at the dock, a long run to a far cove comes directly out of your time on the water.

One question sorts every quote: what is the all-in total, in writing? Ask every company for the same boat and the same hours. The company with the lowest headline rate often does not win that comparison.

Where can you find pontoon boat rentals on Lake Travis?

Three places, and they are not the same rental.
Marinas, private docks and delivery services all rent pontoons, and where the boat starts changes three things:

what you pay, where you park, and how far into the lake your rental hours actually reach.
Pontoons are the right boat for most Lake Travis days for good reasons. They are calm and stable, they are made for anchoring in a cove, there is room for a group to spread out, a ladder for swimming and shade overhead, and there is nothing to learn beyond steering.

Four questions worth asking any company before you book:
Where exactly is the launch point? Not the business address — the dock. Is fuel included, or billed when you return? Does the rental clock start at the dock or when you leave the marina? Is the ramp open at the current lake level? Lake Travis rises and falls, and ramps open and close with it.

Book online or call, and get the launch point confirmed in writing.

The best boat rental on Lake Travis depends on one question most people never ask: who is driving?

There is no single best rental on this lake. There is the right boat for your group, your plan for the day, and whoever ends up holding the wheel.
Start with how you rent. Self-drive means you operate the boat yourself, and Texas boater education rules apply to anyone born on or after September 1, 1993. Captained means a licensed captain operates and your group just rides.

Captained costs more, and it removes the rules and the responsibility.
Then match the boat to the day. A pontoon is calm, social and easy to anchor in a cove. A party barge suits bigger groups and is usually captained. A wake or ski boat is for watersports first. A yacht is captained and built for longer charters.

And the detail that decides more than people expect: where you launch. Lake Travis runs more than sixty miles end to end. A cove forty minutes from your launch point is eighty minutes of your rental spent driving there and back, so pick the launch around where you want to spend the day.

Austin has three lakes and people book the wrong one all the time.

Lady Bird Lake is downtown, right under the skyline — and gas motors are prohibited. It's kayaks, paddleboards, rowing and electric craft. Beautiful, and not where a party boat charter happens.

Lake Austin is held at a constant level by the dam, lined with homes and heavily no-wake. Genuinely lovely for a calm cruise and dinner on the water. Not the lake for a raft-up with twenty-five people and a sound system.

Lake Travis is the one people mean. Open water, real coves, room to anchor a big group, and the party scene at Devil's Cove. It's also a reservoir, so the level moves and the usable shoreline moves with it.
Book the lake first and the vessel second — the lake decides what the day can actually be.

The question we get most: what can we actually bring on the boat?

BYOB works. Two rules.
One — cans and plastic only. No glass on any vessel, and that's not a preference. Broken glass on a deck full of barefoot passengers ends a charter on the spot. Transfer w**e to plastic before you arrive, pre-batch the cocktails at home.

Two — 21 and over for alcohol. Worth saying out loud when a group's got a mix of ages aboard. Tell us at booking and the day gets planned around it rather than around it becoming a problem at the dock.

What you don't need to bring: coolers, ice, the lily pad, the sound system, safety gear, fuel, the captain. All included.

What you should pack: shade, more water than you think you need, real sunscreen, and something waterproof for phones and keys.

Sun on open water is harder than sun on land and every single group underestimates it.

A party boat isn't a type of boat. It's a type of day — the same hull runs a quiet family cruise on Sunday morning and Devil's Cove on Saturday afternoon.

What actually makes the difference is the captain. Devil's Cove fills up, and getting a good tie-up comes down to timing and knowing where the raft-ups form. That's local knowledge rather than a feature on a spec sheet, and it's the whole argument for a captained charter over figuring it out yourself.
Our rate is published rather than quoted:

from $299 an hour with the captain included. Compare that against anyone else before you call us — and ask them for the all-in number for your date, with captain and fuel already inside it.

Three places worth knowing: Devil's Cove is the party water. Starnes Island is where you go when the cove's full. Hippie Hollow is scenic, and it's clothing-optional and 18+, so plan the route knowingly.

And an honest one — Lake Travis is a reservoir. Levels move with rainfall and release, so we plan from where the water actually is on your date rather than from a map printed in a good year.

Pontoon or tritoon — this is a real decision, not a spec sheet detail 🛥️

They look almost identical in a listing photo and they behave completely differently on the water.
Count the tubes. A pontoon rides on two. A tritoon adds a third down the centre, which means more stability, more power, and a far better ride once the lake gets busy.

And that matters here specifically. Lake Travis gets genuinely choppy across the main basin by mid-afternoon on a weekend. On a calm morning you'd never notice the difference. At three on a Saturday with a full group aboard, you notice it a lot.

Double-decker is a different day again. A second level and a slide changes what the boat is for — right for a group that wants the boat to be the destination, wrong for a group that mostly wants to get somewhere and anchor.
Every pontoon in the fleet: Bluetooth sound, bimini shade top, lily pad, coolers, and a licensed captain with fuel and safety gear included.

Yacht rentals on Lake Travis — what that word actually means out here ⚓

Lake Travis is a reservoir, not open water, and "yacht" gets used loosely. So here's the honest version of what turns up at the dock.
The real difference isn't length, it's the cabin. On this lake the line between a large party boat and a yacht is what's enclosed below deck — air conditioning, shade that isn't a bimini top, and somewhere to put people who've had enough sun.

And the part nobody mentions: an onboard restroom changes the entire day. On a full-day charter with a large group it's the single biggest comfort difference between vessels, and it's why a yacht booking outlasts a pontoon booking by hours.

Ask what's aboard before you compare anything else.

Ours carry 20 to 30 guests, an enclosed cabin with AC, a private restroom, and a licensed captain on every charter.

Can I book a boat rental online for Lake Travis? Yes — and here are four things worth confirming before you hit pay.

What's actually included.
Fuel, security deposit, delivery or launch fee, and gratuity. Online checkout rarely surfaces all four before payment, and together they're the difference between the number you paid and the number your day actually costs. If the booking flow doesn't make them clear, call and ask before completing it.

The cancellation and weather policy.

Central Texas weather turns fast, and a boat rental is one of the few bookings genuinely at its mercy. Know the refund terms, know what counts as a weather cancellation, and know who makes that call and when. Finding out on the morning, in the rain, with a group already assembled, is the wrong time.

Whether the boat is confirmed or requested.
Some online systems take payment and then confirm availability afterwards. Those are very different things when you have twelve people who've booked flights around the date. Ask which one just happened — a confirmation email that says "request received" is not a reservation.
And get the specifics in writing.
Boat, date, hours, launch point, and who's driving. If those five things aren't stated in your confirmation, they aren't booked — they're assumed, and assumptions are what produce a different boat at a different dock than you pictured.

Book online any hour, or call and we'll build the day with you.

Where can I rent pontoon boats on Lake Travis? Before you answer that, answer this one — because it decides the entire booking, and most people have never heard of it.

Were you born on or after September 1, 1993?

If so, Texas requires boater education certification to operate most powered boats yourself. That's a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requirement rather than a rental company policy — it applies whoever you rent from, anywhere in the state.

We mention it because a genuinely large number of people book a bareboat rental without knowing the requirement exists, and then discover it at the dock on the morning of a trip that twelve people have already planned around. It's free to look up and takes minutes to confirm. Do it before you book, not after.
If you don't have it, book captained instead.
Same lake, same day, same boat — with someone at the helm who knows the water, the traffic patterns and where the shallow spots are. It isn't a downgrade. And for a group that's planning to drink, it's arguably the better booking regardless of certification, because operating a boat under the influence carries the same seriousness as operating a car.

Then pick your launch point.
Lake Travis runs roughly 65 miles, and which marina you leave from decides what your day can realistically cover. Tell whoever you book with what you actually want to see — a particular cove, the cliffs, a lakeside restaurant — and let them match the launch point to the plan rather than working it out on the water.
