Just like carbs your fuel injectors collect all that’s BAD.
This is a set of Evinrude E-Tec injectors pretty obvious they have some issues. Apparently moisture in your fuel loves to reside here. It is of my opinion that you should inspect and clean your injectors every two years as a routine maintenance. If you ever find a situation where you have water in your fuel it is advisable to remove all fuel components that hold fuel dismantle inspect and clean for obvious reasons.

Lefty Loosy
For my “ Do It Yourselfers “ out there.
If you have a plastic carburetor bowl always check the torque on your main jet.
Pictured above the bowl on the right you can see the jet has backed out and is completely
Blocking any fuel entry into the jet causing a lean condition that will take out that cylinder if run this way.
It is common place to find these jets loose.

Give it a Tug

So many times when a customer complains of a starting issue
Their problem is a Bad , Loose or corroded connection at the Battery cable eyelet. It’s pretty common in a salt water environment where by your cable will corrode inside the eyes hence the “ Give it a Tug “ reface. I suggest locknuts over wing nuts and make Cleaning your battery connections part of your routine Maintenance.

Most modern day outboards have a water flushing port located somewhere at the forward or rear of the motor cover. Most manufacturers say you can run your motor using this entry point but only at low RPM’s. Your water pump is friction based
At lower RPM operation. When using the upper flushing port you are bringing the water down to the pump while the pump is trying to take the water in the opposite direction. This picture is of a water pump where the customer used the upper port but ran the motors RPM above normal idle range. As a Outboard technician I recommend using the lower water intake for all of your normal flushing maintenance.

Bad Memories

Here we have two small outboard motor
Water pump impellers. As you can see
Both have developed a shape that will
prevent them from giving optimum
Pressure and or good reliability. Both of these
Customers came in for tune up related work
And told me that the motor was cooling with no
Water pump issue. " it's peeing with good pressure "
After asking them how long since its been changed
One was 3 years and the other 4 years.
After explaining your water pump replacement is a proactive
Maintenance they agreed to the service.
Good thing. Because stuck on the water or burning up a power head would be a Really " Bad Memory "
