The peeling outer wall of Titanic’s starboard Officers’ Quarters is seen here in an image captured by renowned wreck photographer and diver Emory Kristof during the 1991 IMAX expedition to the site. The open and hanging windows would have led directly into the rooms of captain EJ Smith just behind the bridge, namely his private sitting room. Note the traces of white paint still visibly remaining on areas of the structure at left. Along the Boat Deck nearby to the right would have been stored both Lifeboat 1 and Collapsible C, aboard which Lucille and Cosmo Duff Gordon and Bruce Ismay were respectively among the saved on the night of the disaster.
In the thirty two years since this photo was taken, the area in this view has been one of the most noticeably changed on the familiar bow. Today, much of this wall lies in crumbled fragments on the deck just aft of Titanic’s shattered bridge.
