As the saying goes, it is recommended to always look before you take the leap, especially when it comes to buying from an online auction. In my last post titled 'The Auction Fever', I listed 9 things you can do to have a less stressful auction experience. The first point on that list is doing some research. Why is research and inspection the most important step to take in any auction, despite it being so neglected during the auction process? To help us furthermore, I will attempt to expand on each of the 9 things you can do to reduce the stress that comes with doing business in an online auction.



1. Do your research
I will be using an automobile as the online product that is being sold at the auction that you will like to bid on. Say you visited an online auction and saw a prestine car that got your attention. Given the car's general beauty, you decide to bid on the car. The first thing you should do is research the vehicle, by this, I mean you want to know as much as you can about the vehicle, so where do you begin?

(a) First, you must get the Vehicle Identification Number commonly known as the vehicle's VIN. With this number you can obtain the medical history of the vehicle, there are lots of companies online that will give you the car history for a small fee. Once you obtain the vehicle's history, you will know what condition the vehicle has been in prior. You will know how many people have owned the vehicle in the past, if the vehicle has been in an accident(s) salvaged, flooded, stolen, repossessed or used as a rental vehicle, maintenance history, odometer readings and and manufacturer recalls. Also, you will know what kind of title comes with said vehicle, such titles as original, clean, clear, flood, salvage, bill of sale, certificate of destruction and many more.

(b) Now, you want to know what the vehicle really worth, you can find out the vehicle's worth in many ways, however, the quickest and easiest way is to use the Kelly blue book or you can check your local classified car for sell section and see how much money the same vehicle is listed for. Should these attempts fail, go online to see what the dealers are selling the same car for.

(c) You want to know how much it will cost you to ship the vehicle from the vehicle's current location to your location, you can do this by getting a quote from reliable car transport companies. At least get 3 shipping quotes from 3 different companies.

(d) The next thing you want know is all the governing rules the auction and the seller has put in place. It is very important you understand the fees the seller and/or the auction house charges the buyer in addition to the cost of the car. Most auction have some provision where you can ask the seller your questions. Take advantage of these provisions and ask all your questions especially before you begin to bid.

(e) Take your time to look through the photos and videos the seller has provided. If the photos are stock photos, ask the seller to post the actual photos of the vehicle on the listing page, do not consider photos that are not posted along with the listing.

(f) Read the seller's past and current reviews and ratings, then decide if you want bid for that car.
