Water heater maintenance is crucial. The anode rod on the left should be checked every few months and changed anytime you see pitting of the rod. The heating element on the right has failed due to "dry fire" of the element. Meaning the electric element was switched on with no water in the tank causing the wire inside to fail. Here is both of the failed and new anode rode and heating element side by side for comparison. Please remember to always make sure you have water in your tank before before switching the unit on.
