Tire Pressure Monitoring System:

All new cars and light trucks in the US since 2008 have come equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, or ‘TPMS’. The TPMS system detects when a tire becomes under-inflated and lights up a warning light on the dash.

So what’s the big deal? Well, under-inflated tires can be a real safety concern for everyone . First of all, they don’t handle properly and that can lead to an accident. Second, under-inflated tires can overheat and cause the tire to come apart, which can also lead to an accident.

Government regulations requiring TPMS systems aim to reduce accidents and save lives: A very worthy goal. There are also positive environmental effects because under-inflated tires are fuel wasters – you lose 1 percent of your fuel economy for every 3 pounds of pressure below ideal. So proper tire inflation can save you a tank of gas a year. And your tires last longer so you won’t have to replace them as often.

There are two kinds of TPMS systems. So-called direct systems have a battery powered sensor in each wheel that measures tire pressure. The sensor sends a signal to a receiver that illuminates the warning light if pressure is low on a tire.

Indirect systems use a computer program to detect under-inflation by measuring wheel rotation speeds and other data.

You’ll have to replace TPMS parts as they wear out. Obviously, the batteries in the sensors will run out someday. Road salt and grime can damage sensors too. The system needs to be reset when you rotate or change your tires.

Because the TPMS system is so important to your safety, you should make the necessary repairs when needed. And remember, TPMS is no substitute for regularly checking your tire pressure– at least once a month.

If your Tire light comes on, or if you need tire prices, stop in and see us.

Wheel Alignments

Wheel alignment is often overlooked by car owners until serious tire damage has been done. One wheel can be knocked out of alignment from the rest by hitting a curb or pothole on roads.

The tires will wear out very quickly and will need to be replaced prematurely. It could also lead to suspension damage. Conversely, worn suspension or steering components can lead to alignment problems for motorists.

But the big issue for motorists is safety. When your family car wheels are out of alignment, the vehicle will pull to one side, which could lead to an accident. When you’re out of alignment, you should have it taken care of right away at Hanska Repair Repair Inc..

Signs of alignment problems are: Your car pulls to one side. Also, your steering wheel may not be centered when you’re going straight. If you see the edges of one or more tires rapidly wearing down, you should have your technician at Hanska Repair Inc. look it over.

If you’ve been in an accident that involved a wheel, you should get your alignment checked. A big jolt can seriously knock things out of alignment, but drivers also need to understand that a series of smaller ones can add up. Worn steering or suspension components can also lead to alignment problems for drivers. That’s why your family car manufacturer recommends periodic alignment checks.

If your family car owner’s manual doesn’t specify, once a year might be appropriate. Or check with Cory, your service advisor at Hanska Repair Inc. in Hanska. He’ll also be able to tell you if your vehicle requires a four wheel alignment or if just the front wheels can be aligned.

One thing’s for sure: the cost of the alignment at Hanska Repair Inc. is cheaper than having to buy a couple of new tires because of neglect.
