Working on the True North medallions has me reflecting on my own graduation from High School in 1991. ⁣

I worked 3 jobs that Summer. After lifeguarding at a neighborhood pool, I’d sling sandwiches at Arnold’s in Blacksburg (a local institution) and then grab my guitar and sing on the back patio during happy hour. ⁣

That was the Summer I met my husband. I was 19. I knew within 1 week that we would wind up together. ⁣

And back to the point of the True North Necklace. When you know you know. Always listen to your inner voice. The noise and distractions of the world can make it difficult to hear. Listen closely. ⁣

What do you remember from that time in your life? ⁣

And two points if you’ve been to Arnold’s. ⁣

Five points if you can name the infamous bouncer / Dj that spun records old school style.

Inspired by a dear friends request to design something for all the graduates not having ceremonies this year.

The True North medallion and bracelet. May they always remember to stay true to themselves and follow their true north.

On the front a 22k gold compass points North. On the back, 2020 in Roman numerals. Customized with initial charm of your choice.

If you are interested in ordering, please Direct message me as soon as possible. Everything takes a little longer these days. 😘

There are so many events that we are missing in these times of social distancing, but graduations have got to be one of the toughest. ⁣

Thinking about these “kids” setting off under these circumstances is unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime. Finding a job...an apartment... what does that even look like now?⁣

We are not defined by where we live, work, wear, or do. Rather, we are defined by what we do for others and how we love our family, friends, and strangers. ⁣

The golden compass reminds us to follow our true North. Listen to your own voice. Be prepared to write your own definition of “success”. Get creative...really creative with what comes next. Out of difficult times comes innovation and efficiency. I can’t wait to see what these graduates will do! ⁣

All others are one of a kind and available for adoption. They don’t require food or water, and never bark. 😘. DM me if you would like to schedule an adoption interview.

Jewelry Collection Preview & Social Hour

My first ever LIVE Facebook broadcast was more fun than I though, even though it started 5 minutes early with a chicken nugget quarrel. At least it involved a great margarita and connecting with friends I haven't seen in way too long! The good news is that the video is forever embedded in Facebook, so if you reach the end of Netflix, you can always watch it again! Love to you all for the support!!! You guys are the best!

5 Easy Steps To Designing a Cohesive Collection⁣

Part 1 (of 5) – Don’t forget to bookmark this page!⁣

Do you ever feels stuck in a design rut? Do you sometime feel your pieces are all over the map? Do you find yourself jumping from one thing to another?⁣

Over the last few months, as I worked on developing the JJ Singh Metal & Art Academy, I decided I wanted more than just to teach a skill. I wanted to help artists develop their own voices and become unique and recognizable artists in their respective spaces. ⁣

This 5 part series is filled with FREE information and challenges to help you design and develop a NEW and completely YOU jewelry collection (or any type of collection). I hope you will join me in the creative ride and share your ideas with one another along the way.⁣

Part 1: The Word Cloud Challenge ⁣

Before you can begin to design a collection, you need to find your inspiration, or your theme. Inspiration is all around us. It can be external (things you see in the world) or Internal (feelings or experiences, memories, dreams of the future).⁣

The most powerful themes are ones that are highly personal and have a real connection to the artist. What is important in your life? What do you admire in the world? What do you find beautiful? What makes you happy? What story do you want to tell? My theme for this collection was “Springs Tiny Treasures”. You can see the types of words I close in my word cloud above. In future posts I’ll show how that word cloud translated into a complete jewelry collection, but for now….⁣

The first challenge is for YOU to build a Word Cloud that represents your future collection. Be specific with your words. Describe your materials, your process, your style, your feelings, images that speak to you, etc. ⁣

Word Clouds are amazing (and fun) tools to visually represent what is important to you. You can give each word a specific “weight” that will make it larger or smaller in your graphic. Change the shape of the graphic and colors to reflect your personal brand.⁣

There are many free word cloud editors out there, but I particularly like https://www.wordclouds.com/

Save your wordcloud and post to share and get fee

I have long believed that a technically demanding tradecraft like metalsmithing could not be effectively taught through a computer. ⁣

My journey began at 18 years old in the tiny corner of a master goldsmiths studio in rural Southwest Virginia. It was there I learned how to saw, pierce, and solder. It was there I learned how to set stones. It was there where I witnessed the kindness and generosity of my teacher. Not only demonstrated by the inheritance of my first set of tools when I left for college, but also by the generosity of his knowledge and artistry. ⁣

As my search to learn more continued in a non-digital world (this was the early 90’s) the only way to gain new skills was through in person classes (which were hard to find) or through books (which included a lot of trial and error) which was an extremely slow and frustrating process. ⁣

All trades require a blend of technical knowledge and artistic instinct...but I can’t think of a trade more technically demanding than metalsmithing. ⁣

Metalsmiths require a super set of skills from many other trades including carpentery (sawing, piercing, sanding), sculpture (wax carving & casting), illustration (drawing and sketching), blacksmithing (soldering, forgoing), gemology (stone setting), etc. ⁣

And that’s just the technical part! Now add to it the artistry required to conceptualize beautiful, meaningful, and wearable art. ⁣

The rigorous requirements drew me into a lifetime of learning that evolved into a passion for teaching. ⁣

I’ve met too many artists along the way who are scared to share. Scared someone will “steal” their design, or scared someone will learn to do what they can do. ⁣

As I attempt to follow in the footsteps of my first teacher, I find the greatest joy in sharing knowledge and coaching others to develop their unique artistic voice. ⁣

The JJ Singh Metal & Art Academy is my attempt to re-create an apprentice style relationship and foster a community where ideas are shared and artistic voices are developed. ⁣

This was a long winded introduction, so if you’ve made it this far, I hope you will check out the Academy when we launch....soon! ⁣

I’m finding it hard to let go of the desire for perfection. ⁣

When is X (enter anything here) good enough? ⁣

When is my Instagram story edited properly? When is my jewelry polished to perfection? When is my next collection refined enough?⁣
When is my website redesign ready?⁣

The 80/20 rule states that 80% of results are caused by 20% of key factors. ⁣

The effort required to achieve the final 20% of results, such that a piece of jewelry becomes “perfect,” takes an astonishing amount (80%) of effort. ⁣

This is when the law of diminishing returns kick in, and this is when we need to decide if the state of perfection is worth this huge amount of incremental effort, or if we should move on and focus on more important projects.⁣

It’s tough to know when to stop when it comes to creative endeavors. ⁣

What can I do???⁣

(1) learn from experience⁣
(2) use your gut. ⁣

Look at what the best folks are doing for ideas and reference. Sometimes we may have a very precise vision in our mind, but this could be just a neurotic target that makes little difference to people. Neurotic perfectionists are guilty of this. (Guilty as charged!)⁣

What is the marginal benefit you can achieve from this additional investment of time, effort? For example, what change can you make from spending an additional hour on this task?⁣
Is this marginal benefit worth the marginal cost (the extra time, effort) of achieving it? Every action has an opportunity cost — considering all the other things you can do with this time, effort, is it worthwhile to strive for the marginal benefit or use that for other projects?⁣

While editing my top secret project :) I agonized over every “um” and “uh”, but then realized that these are natural parts of speech. This is what makes us human...what makes us feel connected. ⁣

Nobody wants to listen to a robot… We want to listen to people. We want to feel connected as humans.⁣

Take a step back and evaluate the gain versus the cost. This is especially important for perfectionists (like me). ⁣

So here I am laying it all out there… My big secret project I’ve been working on will not be perfect when I launch. There will be mistakes, there will be er

Photo 1 (of 3) I’m so excited and incredibly anxious! ⁣

I’ve been working on a new concept for 4 weeks and I’m not sure if it’s going to work. ⁣

Have I wasted my time? Is it technically viable? Will it fill a need? Will it bring joy? ⁣

I don’t know the answers to these questions, but I do know that I’ve learned a ton along the way. I do know that I’ve enjoyed the process of learning new things. And regardless of if it “works” or not, I know more now than I did before. ⁣

“I don’t believe in failure. It’s not failure if you enjoy the process”⁣
Oprah Winfrey⁣

Are you stepping out of your comfort zone during this crazy time of social distancing? Are you taking a risk? Trying something new? ⁣

My dad always said, “measure twice, cut once”. I ignored him for a long time and it cost me a lot of time re-doing things from the start. It’s incredible how when I got older, he seemed smarter. Thanks Mark Twain.

Loving the ear jacket concept, these angels wings become the backdrop for triple layered celestial. All in sterling silver. Etched on the silhouette curio, soldered and finished by hand. ⁣

We all have angels in our lives. Whether they are with us now, or guiding us from above, they are there. ⁣

Today I saw a red cardinal on my solo walk in the woods. He looked at me and didn’t flinch. I was sad. I had been crying. I thought it might be my father. Checking in on me from beyond. He was a bird watcher you know. ⁣

These are stressful and uncertain days and I fear the worst is yet to come for our country. ⁣

I’m so grateful for our healthcare workers, grocery clerks, delivery drivers, restauranteurs, and countless others who continue to put themselves at risk every day to help save our friends, coworkers, and family. ⁣

These are the angels of this moment. These are the angels of this decade. Hundreds of thousands of angels right here right now taking care of the rest of us. ⁣

They are watching out for all of us in ways we may not comprehend for generations. ⁣

So do what you can to be grateful for the little things. ⁣

Contribute where you can...⁣

Consolidate your shipping⁣
check in on neighbors⁣
take only what you need⁣
donate if you can ⁣

WEAR masks⁣

pray⁣

These are dried, pressed, flowers from my yard over the last 3 weeks with micro (and I mean micro) butterflies and vines in sterling silver) all set in a transparent resin to make a cuff.
