Here's a (much abbreviated) resin injection repair for small chip damage to autoglass, performed by our very own certified technician, Casey.
We've all been stuck behind a dump truck on bumpy roads before, and the truth is some minor chip damage is unavoidable. Can't fault anyone for seeing a small crack as a low-priority in the grand-scheme of vehicle maintenance. However, these small chips ***will*** expand. Icy winters, scorching summers or the constant stress of roadway use all move the needle little by little.
Eventually, these cracks expand to the point where windshield integrity is at risk and full replacement is necessary.
Resin repairs are quick, inexpensive ways to prevent more serious windshield damage. Even if done on an annual basis, you're saving in the long run (whether by avoiding full replacement cost OR a ticket).
A good rule of thumb we go by is the "Quarter Test": Any chips or cracks smaller than a quarter-dollar coin is perfect for repairs, with a very good chance of no further expansion. Anything about the same size or slightly larger, the repair can be done but much greater chance of reappearance.
Once cracks expand beyond that - say to the length of a dollar bill - replacement is the only viable option for windshield integrity.
