Catalytic converters only work if the precious metals inside can actually contact the exhaust gases.

Those metals live inside tiny microchannels, where oxidation and reduction take place. If they become coated, contaminated or displaced, efficiency drops — even if nothing “looks” broken from the outside.

And when it comes to OEM vs. aftermarket?
Converters are designed to last the life of the vehicle. When replacement is needed, it’s usually because something caused the failure — not because the converter simply wore out.

Good diagnostics start with good data.

Air-fuel ratio and O2 sensors measure oxygen in the exhaust stream and send that feedback to the ECU. That information controls how much fuel enters the combustion chamber — and ultimately what reaches the catalytic converter.

A converter’s job is to clean pollution. But minimizing pollution starts long before the exhaust hits the catalyst.

Fuel trims don’t lie.

If you’re seeing long-term or short-term fuel trims hovering around ±10%, the engine is working harder than it should to maintain stoichiometry. It may not be setting a code yet — but it’s compensating for something.

Too much air. Too much fuel. An underlying issue.

Not every P0420 means the catalytic converter is dead.

Sometimes the converter is doing its job — it just isn’t getting the right feed gases because of a faulty sensor or another upstream issue.

Before replacing the cat, rule out a false 420 code. Fix the sensor. Fix the root cause. The converter might start working properly again.

Before replacing the converter, slow down and diagnose.

Start by fixing any additional codes.
Check O2 sensor performance.
Perform a thorough visual inspection of the engine bay and exhaust system.

A purple or blue converter? That points to overheating and fuel management issues.
Excess carbon in the tailpipe? That buildup may be affecting combustion — and potentially the catalyst surface itself.

The goal isn’t just replacement. It’s understanding what caused the failure.

P0420 or P0430 doesn’t automatically mean it needs a catalytic converter.

The real question is: Why did it fail?

Before replacing anything, you need to rule out misfires, fuel trim issues, O2 sensor problems, and anything affecting air, fuel or spark. A converter depends on proper engine operation to do its job.

Fix the problem that killed the cat. Then replace the converter.
