North Country History The cutting of the White Pine was Michigan's greatest industry in the 19th Century. Learn more about this period of Michigan's history here.

Michigan's white pine lumber industry was to Michigan in the 19th century as the automobile industry was to the state in the 20th century. It was the single most important industry to the state, it brought more wealth, and led to a large migration of labor to Michigan. And like the automotive industry, it led to environmental damages to the state as well. This site aims to teach about both the pos

itive and negative impact that logging had on Michigan during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hopefully one will come away with an "Ah hah" moment and take away some valuable new information.
