Florida neighbors and friends, my best post- hurricane advice is this:
(I'm a licensed Public Adjuster in Fort Walton Beach, the eye went just over my home)
1) Do not sign contracts until you do your homework.
A) You do not need to decide on a roofer or contractor unless you are getting free tarping, it's to get a tree off your house, or something like that.
Don't let them tell you insurance will work faster with them, supplies will run out, or prices will go up. These are stories to get contracts signed while walking up and down streets.
Sales people will be walking the streets for months, there is no hurry. It's more important to pick the right one.
It's also important to make sure all your damages are covered, and that can take a while sometimes. If you rush to do work that wasn't paid for, then it's too late to argue for that coverage.
If another storm hits tomorrow many of those same people will be wherever that storm hits. These are mostly door knockers, sales people, likely from south Florida, not local.
Don't let fear tactics get you stuck with a contractor from south Florida who is just here for money and won't really be there for you. Claims can take a while. You need someone who will be with your the whole way
B) Do not sign a contract with a Public Adjuster for similar fear tactics. Most street walking licensed Public Adjusters are also just sales people who don't do most of the adjusting job, and will onto the next storm or back home while your claim is in the worls. You need someone who will be there ever step, even if it takes a few months to work out all the details.
Lean on your insurance company to do their job. You pay a lot of money every month for this. Many claims will be paid just fine, and there will be nothing more to go for.
But you don't know that and your Public Adjuster doesn't know that until seeing the damage and the claim payout.
Once you get your claim determination, reach out to me (or another Public Adjuster), and I can take a look at your payment and your damages.
Of course if you don't want to deal with your insurance company, or if it's a second home, a Public Adjuster is a great choice to represent you, and it's only 10% for hurricane claims.
The bottom line - Go local. I've worked with many great contractors in this area. If you need a recommendation for a contractor or have questions message me here or text 850.716.9550.
Stay safe, stay smart!
