A customer in Naples brought us his two-year-old black Range Rover last spring with a problem he could not figure out.
He had been washing it twice a week using premium car soap, dedicated microfiber mitts, the two-bucket method, and quality drying towels. He was doing everything right.
And yet the paint had a persistent haze under direct sunlight that no amount of home polishing would remove.
Under our shop lighting we could see exactly what had happened — thousands of microscopic mineral etch marks across every horizontal panel. Distributed in the exact pattern that water droplets take when they sit on paint and evaporate in Florida sun.
He had been doing everything right except one thing.
He was rinsing with tap water.
Fort Myers area tap water runs between 200 and 250 parts per million of dissolved minerals — pulled directly from the Floridan Aquifer as water travels through millions of years of limestone deposits beneath the state.
When that mineral-loaded water hits your paint and dries in Florida heat, the dissolved calcium and magnesium do not evaporate with the water. They crystallize on your clear coat as alkaline mineral deposits sitting at pH 9 to 10.
At the surface temperatures Florida paint reaches in summer — up to 180°F on a dark hood — that alkaline reaction etches the clear coat permanently. Not on top of it. Into it.
Polishing removes the visible deposit. It cannot restore the clear coat that was chemically dissolved beneath.
