Kingwood Fire Department – Attack 5 Radio Installation

Attack 5 received a communications upgrade with the installation of a new Motorola APX 8500 tri-band mobile radio system.

The old VHF radio was removed from the center console, the new radio body was mounted in the rear console area, and a new wiring chase was created to properly route and protect the power and data cables. The radio head and associated wiring were installed and secured, and a new all-band antenna was installed using the existing antenna location.

The system powered up properly after installation. Final radio testing will be completed once programming is finished.

Another clean communications upgrade from Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC.

Kingwood Fire Department – Tower 5

Tower 5 received several upgrades from Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC, including installation of a dual-head Motorola mobile radio, AVL system, Firecom components, and electrical upgrades throughout the apparatus.

We also completed a Roto-Ray LED replacement, installed a new rear warning light, routed and protected new wiring, secured equipment, and cleaned up existing wiring to keep everything serviceable and dependable.

A lot goes into making these systems work together correctly on a fire apparatus, from communications and crew intercoms to warning lighting and vehicle tracking.

Thank you to Kingwood Fire Department for continuing to trust Marion Upfitter with Tower 5.

Sometimes the scan tool points you in the right direction — but the diagnosis doesn’t stop there.

We were troubleshooting a turbo issue after the scan tool showed the VGT was not operating correctly. From there, we tested the VGT actuator and turbo vane movement to determine whether the issue was electrical, actuator-related, or caused by the vanes binding inside the turbo.

Unfortunately, the testing confirmed that the turbo itself was bad.

On the Cummins L9, the engine management system can limit operation when it sees a serious VGT/turbo problem, helping protect the engine from further damage. In this case, the scan tool and hands-on testing helped us narrow the problem down before replacing parts unnecessarily.

That is why proper diagnostics matter. A fault code is only the starting point — the actuator, wiring, vane movement, and turbo all need to be checked before making the final call.

At Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC, we combine scan-tool diagnostics with hands-on mechanical testing to find the actual problem.

If your fire apparatus or emergency vehicle is losing power, throwing turbo or regen codes, or not running like it should, give us a call. We can help diagnose the issue before unnecessary parts get replaced.

We do a little bit of everything.

While we were already at the fire department, they asked if we could take care of a skid unit that needed a new carburetor. No problem — we got the part, installed it, and took care of it while we were there.

That’s the benefit of working with Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC. If you have something that needs repaired, serviced, replaced, or upgraded, just ask. We can get parts for just about anything and handle a wide range of repairs on fire apparatus, skid units, emergency vehicles, lighting, radios, pumps, electrical systems, and more.

Sometimes it’s the small jobs that keep equipment ready when it’s needed most.

Using the right scan tools can save departments and customers a lot of money.

Modern fire apparatus, ambulances, and emergency vehicles rely heavily on electronic systems. When a warning light, engine fault, transmission issue, ABS problem, or electrical fault shows up, guessing and replacing parts can get expensive fast.

A good diagnostic scan tool lets us see what the vehicle is actually telling us, check live data, identify fault codes, narrow down the problem, and avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

At Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC, we use professional diagnostic equipment to help find the problem before throwing parts at it. That means less downtime, less wasted money, and a faster path to getting your apparatus back in service.

Proper diagnostics can turn a costly guessing game into a targeted repair.

🚒 Is Your Fire Truck’s Valve Leaking?

A leaking valve may seem like a small problem, but it can quickly affect pump performance and leave your apparatus unavailable when it is needed most.

At Marion Upfitter & Detail LLC, we can inspect, diagnose, and rebuild many fire apparatus valves—replacing worn seals and internal components to restore proper operation and help prevent costly downtime.

If you notice water leaking, difficulty opening or closing a valve, or a valve that will not seal completely, contact us to schedule an inspection.
