Meet James.

Assistant manager at our Englewood shop, eight months in.

Here's something you'd only know from the inside. When we asked the Englewood team for this series — names, roles, what each person likes about the job — James is the one who wrote it all out. Six people, one by one. He put himself last.

Ask him what he enjoys about the work and the answer is keeping things neat and organized, and helping the team any way he can. Which, if you think about it, is the entire job description of a good assistant manager. Not the person doing the most visible thing. The person making sure everything else runs.

That's the last of the Englewood crew — Chris, Edward, Anthony, Adolfo, Nicholas, and James. Six people who, between them, are the reason your car gets handled the way it does.

Everybody here knows the 4 o’clock downpour.

The sky goes dark, the road disappears, and suddenly you’re driving through a car wash.

Your car or truck may feel fine on dry pavement, but worn tread shows itself in standing water. The grooves move water away—and the faster you drive, the less time they have to do it.

When the rain hits, slow down and turn your headlights on. If you start to hydroplane, ease off the gas, hold the wheel steady, and don’t brake hard.

Meet Nicholas.

6 months on the Englewood team — the newest tech in the shop.

Ask him what he likes about the job and the answer is learning. Picking up something new, getting faster at it, becoming a more useful part of the crew. Four months in, that's exactly the right answer.

Here's the thing about this trade that people outside it don't always realize: nobody ever finishes learning it. Cars change every model year. Systems that didn't exist a decade ago are standard now. The tech with twenty years in is still reading, still asking, still getting shown something by somebody else in the bay.

So a new guy who shows up wanting to learn isn't starting at the bottom of the ladder. He's doing the same thing everyone else in the shop is doing — just earlier in the process.

You came in for an oil change.

While the car was up, somebody looked at your tires. And your brakes. Your belts, your hoses, your fluid levels, the lights front and back.

You didn’t ask for any of that — and here’s the part worth saying out loud: none of it turns into work unless you say so.

An inspection isn’t a list of things to sell you. It’s information. Some of what we find needs attention now. Some can wait until your next visit. And some is just worth knowing so it doesn’t surprise you six months from now.

Your tires lose air in ways that have nothing to do with a nail.

Air escapes slowly on its own. A pound or two a month is normal — no leak required. On top of that, pressure moves with temperature. Heat pushes it up, a cool morning pulls it back down. So the reading you got back in June isn't the reading you have today.

Here's the part that catches people: low pressure doesn't look like anything. A tire can be well under where it should be and still look completely fine standing in the driveway. What it actually does is wear the outer edges faster than the middle, make the car feel a little vague when you turn, and give you less grip in exactly the kind of weather where you'd want more of it.

The number you want is on the sticker inside the driver's door. Not the number stamped into the side of the tire — that one is the tire's maximum, not your car's target. Different numbers, and people mix them up all the time.

Check them cold, before you've driven anywhere. Two minutes at any gas station.

Meet Adolfo.

Three years on the Englewood team. Ask his manager what Adolfo is known for and the answer isn't a specific repair — it's that he keeps the shop clean and keeps things organized.

That sounds like a small thing. It really isn't.

A clean shop is a shop where the right tool is where it's supposed to be. Where one car's parts don't get mixed up with another car's. Where somebody spots a fresh drip on the floor, because the floor was clean yesterday. Organization is how a busy day stays accurate instead of just fast.

This is the part of the job you'll never see. You'll just get your car back from a place that was paying attention — and that doesn't happen by luck. It happens because somebody decided the details matter.

Three questions worth asking anywhere you take your car.

"Can you show me?"
A good answer involves walking you back to the car, or a photo. The part in question is usually visible once someone points at it.

"Does this need to happen now, or can it wait?"
Real answers sound like: now, next visit, or keep an eye on it. All three are legitimate. A shop that puts everything in the same category isn't sorting for you.

"What happens if I wait?"
This one tells you whether you're looking at a safety issue or a convenience issue. Brakes, tires, and steering are their own category — those get answered straight.

Ask us any of these. We'd rather explain it twice than have you drive off unsure. 🔧

That's the most common way people describe an A/C problem, and it's worth paying attention to.

Your A/C is a sealed system. It doesn't get used up like gas or oil — if the refrigerant level dropped, it went somewhere. That's usually a leak, and a leak stays a leak.

Which is why the recharge cans at the parts store are a short-term answer. The cold comes back for a few weeks, then you're in the same place.

Finding where it's going takes a test, not a guess. Bring it by any JSN location and we'll take a look.

Ask him about the job and he'll tell you about two things: the complicated problems, and the people he's teaching to solve them.

That second part matters more than it sounds.

The tech who trains the newer guys sets the standard for how every car in the shop gets handled — including yours.
