37 more days until the Pipe Masters and the crowning of the 2019 world champ. 5 men have a shot at it: Italo, Gabriel, Jordy, Filipe, and Kolohe. Will all 5 make it to the quarters, semis, and finals? As history will tell us, most likely not. There will be upsets. Look for spoilers like Owen Wright here, who is not stranger to big barrels. John John has also hinted he'll be back in time for Pipe this year and don't count out the GOAT- as well as the local Hawaiian's and a handful of others who have nothing to lose. Is it just me or does it look like John John has a motor on that board? He absolutely destroyed that unassuming Margaret River wall. Maybe he's been secretly working with Carl Ekstrom and Tom Lochtefeld on some sort of futuristic jet propulsion thingy. Come to think of it, maybe that's why he's been off tour the past few months... In physics, mathematics, and related fields, a wave is a disturbance (change from equilibrium) of one or more fields such that the field values oscillate repeatedly about a stable equilibrium (resting) value. If the relative amplitude of oscillation at different points in the field remains constant, the wave is said to be a standing wave. If the relative amplitude at different points in the field changes, the wave is said to be a traveling wave. Waves can only exist in fields when there is a force that tends to restore the field to equilibrium. In other words, here's a picture of lines to the horizon created by a storm off Antarctica. There are air guys (i.e. Filipe, Kolohe, Jack, Yago, etc). There are power surfers (i.e. Michel, Wade, Conner, Cardoso, etc). And then there's both (Gabriel, Mikey, Italo, etc) and this guy named Jordy. At 6'3" and almost 200 lbs, he's got the power thing covered. But at that size, how is he popping airs like this?! Don't call it a comeback! Owen's been here for years. As you'll remember, Owen Wright qualified for the CT in 2009 and finished his debut season of 2010 ranked No. 7 and earned Rookie of the Year. He floated around between 3rd and 37th from 2011-2014, and just when it looked like he was back on track with a 5th place finish in 2015- he suffered a traumatic brain injury before the year end Pipe Masters. The incident proved life-threatening, and for a time it looked like Owen's career was over. He sat out the entire 2016 season, learning how to surf all over again. He eventually returned to competition in 2017, and as you've probably heard by now, he won the season opener at Snapper Rocks. Unbelievable. Owen has since looked unstoppable and finished 2017 and 2018 at No. 6, won this year's Tahiti Pro against an in-form Gabriel Medina, and now sits at No. 7 in the ratings.
