KAY MCLANE DESIGN, LLC KAY MCLANE- teacher, blogger, interior designer, home stager, compulsive organizer, believer in beauty with simplicity
My personal goal is to walk through this life with joy and grace. Even though I sometimes don't accomplish it, I believe in a "less is more" philosophy. I'm a mother, grandmother, designer, chronic organizer, tree hugger and book lover. Through my KayMcLaneDesign blog (kaymclanedesign.wordpress.com) and PeaceFullHome blog (PeaceFullHome.wordpress.com) I hope to share some insights or information that make your walk a little more peaceful and beautiful. Great design begins and ends with homeowners having a functional, beautiful space that truly reflects who they are; a home that becomes their sanctuary.

ACTIVE | Lower Macungie Township

Hi Everyone!

Next week, on Tuesday, January 15th, I’ll be teaching an organization class at Lower Macungie Township’s Community Center (Pennsylvania).

It’s a one-session class from 6:00-9:00 pm, and is a great, fun way to start 2019 with not only getting organization tools but also understanding why so many of us have a lot more stuff than we need.

If you’re free, please register and bring a friend (or two). An organizational plan can help you live a more productive, serene life (really)!

If you’re already super organized, you’re still welcome—your input would be welcome to others in the class —but if you can’t attend, please pass this on to a friend or family member.

Here’s the link to register: https://campscui.active.com/orgs/LowerMacungieTownship#/selectSessions/2517507. If you have any problems signing up, just reach out to me.

Handouts, which provide a roadmap to get started will be provided.

Hope to see you next week!
Kay

Rhythm

In DESIGN, there are Seven Principles and Seven Elements. Today, we're talking about one of the seven principles: Rhythm. Most of you have listened to music and felt the pulse and maybe, like me, even tapped your foot to the beat. Rhythm in design is similar to that. When you walk into a room, your eyes naturally look around and take in the different features of that space; feel it's beat. [ 187 more words ]

Color!

Color! It’s amazing how a word made up of only 5 letters impacts our lives so much. We've talked about how one way to make your indoor and outdoor spaces work together is through color. A color “scheme” helps you not only tie the inside to the outside but also marries your rooms together. There are literally thousands of options when you’re talking about color. [ 441 more words ]

The Flooring Debate

I get questions regularly about choosing between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring. There are so many different products to choose from, and for many homeowners it can be confusing and challenging. Today, let's pay the "comparison game" with these two products. What's the difference? Engineered flooring has consumed a fair share of the long-held solid wood flooring market. But what makes the two products unique? [ 482 more words ]

Morning Has Broken

It’s 3:40 on Monday morning. The wind is howling outside and I’m sitting at my computer typing away. I tossed and turned for a while before finally deciding that I wasn’t going to quiet my brain, so I’m up. My mind is filled with so much. Today is the last day of grade school for my granddaughter Lauren, and I’m a bit emotional. [ 602 more words. ]

Blessed

Last night, as I sat in the hot tub under my beautiful locust tree, I thought about the week that passed too quickly. The sky was sprinkled with stars and the air was still. This is my favorite season—the one where I can wear Birkenstocks and sleeveless tops, when the sun warms the ground we walk on and nature is in full bloom. [ 588 more words. ]

In Memoriam

This post was originally published on Memorial Day, 2014. It's just as timely today. I’m sitting outside, on my deck, writing the first draft of today’s post. The weather, for me, is ideal. The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. The hollies we planted last fall, which were almost dead from the brutal winter, are showing some green and springing back into life. [ 992 more words. ]

Talking to Strangers

I sat next to an elderly gentleman, named George, in a surgical waiting room this morning. His first comment to me was that the sun outside was a welcome change from the rainy weeks we've been experiencing. I agreed and we talked for a few minutes. Then, about a half hour later, a volunteer came over to give everyone an update on his or her family member. [ 598 more words. ]

Gardens and Life

Over the weekend, we worked on the vegetable garden. Ours is about 300 square feet—not too small, not too large—as Goldilocks would say, “it’s just right”. Just like there are different varieties of gardens, there are limitless ways to plan, plant and maintain them. There have been years when I’ve spent hours planning exactly how I wanted to lay out the garden, then watered at the same time every day and weeded every morning. [ 519 more words. ]

Rules of Engagement

Most of us invest a fair amount of energy on how we engage with others, but give a lot less thought to how we engage with ourselves. Why is that? If we can’t make the time to take care of, nurture and give attention to ourselves in loving, kind ways, we’re a lot less likely to move through our lives in a manner that’s joyful. SOS

In the 1830s, American inventor and painter, Samuel Morse, began perfecting an electric telegraph. In 1844 he transmitted the short biblical phrase, "what hath God wrought", by wire from Washington, DC to Baltimore, Maryland. SOS is a Morse code international distress signal, and the only nine element symbol—making it easily recognizable. It's also an ambigram, which means it can be read upside down. [ 401 more words. ]

Would Have, Could Have, Should Have- Tuesday’s Thoughts

Yesterday, I started the conversation about getting to the end of our lives with no regrets. How are we experiencing the time we do have? Many of us run through life. We don’t use our time to do what, at the end of our lives, we’ll probably consider “important”—to make the things that truly matter the priority. We can't turn back the clock and redo the past. Would Have, Could Have, Should Have- Monday’s Thoughts

My hope is to get to the end of this life without regrets. That may not be completely possible, but I want to live in a way that makes it a bit more attainable. Taking the Scaffolding Down

When I teach classes on organization, I start with a dozen goals. Next, we discuss the reasons we get to a place where we're overwhelmed with "stuff". If we don't know why we're in a situation, it's tough to change our behavior, and we're likely to end up back where we started. Once people have an "aha" moment in class it's much easier for them not to fall into the same routines. [ 636 more words. ]

According to Universe Today, “the modern form of humans evolved about 200,000 years ago”. Homo sapiens have been walking this planet for a very long time, and our "turn around the dance floor" is a minuscule blip on the wheel of life. You might remember the "Joy & Grace" rock. It was a gift from my husband, Larry. He gave it to me because I've often said that my goal is to "walk through life with joy and grace". I don’t have a lot of “things” that belonged to my Dad. I have a mug that I had engraved with “chairman of the bar”, because he built a family bar in the basement of my first home—a little cape cod. Cloth Napkins

Cloth Napkins….I'll explain shortly A lot of folks work hard to "make everything perfect" when they have guests over for dinner or a party. I try to do that too. Part of it, for me, is wanting my guests to know that their presence is important—that I care enough to "pull out all the stops." An “Ace In The Hole”—Intentional Living

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting my friend Ginny. We met almost nine years ago at the faith community I’m part of. I sensed almost immediately how special Ginny is.
