Summer is build-up season. Thunderstorms contain nearly every major hazard in aviation in one system, and they can develop faster than forecasts can keep up.
The guidance is simple, even if the flying is not. Use the resources listed above, conduct a thorough weather briefing, and maintain at least 20 NM from severe cells (FAA AC 00-24C).
Respect outflow boundaries and wind shear well ahead of the storm.
When in doubt, the Transport Canada AIM says it best: avoiding thunderstorms is the safest policy.
Brief it. Watch it. Respect it.
Do not let “almost made it” become part of your decision-making.
