It's been a fun 3 years with the 128i! But alas, it's time to move on and the car is now officially for sale:

Today I'm putting my 2008 BMW 128i (E82) up for sale. This car has a tough to find combination of a 6-speed manual transmission, the N52B30 engine and the OEM Sport package. These are essentially...

After blogging for a year, I fear this journey is at an end, as my website, Investigating The Apex, is no more. Although for anyone looking for help with the BMW 128i DIYs, I preserved the work in an old Grassroots Motorsports thread I started years ago, that I figured I would share in the event it might help someone:

Last year I picked up a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06+ tires for my 128i. They did fine—comfortable, quiet, decent grip—but something always felt… a little too soft. This year, I decided to find out if the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4s come anywhere near their sublime summer-only cousins.

Same size. Same car. Same roads. Totally different feel. The Michelins trade a touch of comfort for sharper steering, more confidence, and a lot less “rolling over on themselves” in corners. For an all-season tire, they’ve got surprisingly sporty manners.

Are they worth the extra money? If you’re the kind of person who chases apexes even on your commute—yeah, probably. For everyone else? Maybe not as clear-cut.

As a pretty hardcore car nut, I’ve grown to appreciate tires with stiff sidewalls and the kind of grip that feels like they’ve been slathered in Elmer’s glue. For the past few months, I’ve been running Falken RT660+ tires mounted on Apex wheels, enjoying every ounce of their summer stickines...

Ever wondered what it's like to intentionally slide a car sideways? I did too—until I signed up for drift school on a whim. 🏁

In my latest blog post, I dive into the unexpected challenges and thrills of learning to drift at Colorado Drift School. From battling my instincts to embracing the chaos, it's a ride you won't want to miss.

I’ve been a car guy for most of my life. Over the past couple of decades, I’ve spent plenty of time carving through canyons, attending more car events than I can count, and participating in a variety of motorsports — from drag racing to HPDEs, autocross, time trials, and even a bit of ice raci...

Ever wonder how much it really costs to keep a BMW 128i on the road?

I’ve owned mine for 2.5 years now, and after digging through every receipt (and reliving every headache), I tallied up the actual running costs—no mods, no accident repairs, just the stuff it takes to keep the thing alive.

Spoiler: the number isn’t small. Let’s just say it’s a lot more than what my old Hondas or Miatas ever asked for.

If you’re curious (or just want to feel better about not owning one), check out the full breakdown here:

Pro tip: don’t just buy the car—buy the owner. Trust me on that one.

Ah, the E82 128i. A handsome, compact, naturally aspirated BMW coupe that, in theory, should be the last bastion of “reliable” German simplicity. At least, that’s what I told myself before buying mine. Fast forward 2.5 years, and I can safely say: if you’re coming from Hondas or Miatas, you....

While it's been an interesting experiment, I can't see myself wanting to own another old German car, likely ever again.

Listen—I really do enjoy driving my 128i. But the maintenance side of this car is slowly draining the life out of me. Coming from a long line of reliable Japanese sports cars, I don’t think I fully grasped what I was signing up for when I bought this little Bimmer 2.5 years ago. Exhibit A: here....

After months of sourcing parts, wrenching, and questioning my sanity, I finally swapped in a 3.73 differential with a Wavetrac L*D. In the post I go over:

⚙️ How the shorter gears and L*D changed the car’s character on the street
⚙️ What it’s like to live with at highway speeds
⚙️ Why my wife says it feels like my old S2000 (high praise!)
⚙️ Whether the $2,000 investment was actually worth it

If you’re curious how a simple gear and diff swap can transform a humble N52-powered BMW, check it out here:

If you’ve been following along, you probably saw my recent post about building and installing a Wavetrac L*D into a 3.73 differential and swapping it into my 128i. It was a fairly lengthy, costly process—one that had me questioning my sanity more than once. After everything was buttoned up, I to...

I finally tackled a project I’ve been day-dreaming about for a while: pulling a 3.73 diff out of a junkyard donor, tearing it down, swapping in a Wavetrac L*D, and bolting the whole thing into my 128i.

I documented every step — from removing the original 3.23, to cleaning and rebuilding the junkyard unit, to the install itself — complete with tips, photos, and lessons learned along the way. If you’ve ever wondered what’s involved in doing your own diff swap (or if it’s even worth it), this is the write-up you’re looking for.

Check it out here:

Whether you’re planning your own swap or just curious what’s involved, hopefully it saves you some headaches (and maybe a few curse words). Feedback, questions, and your own experiences are welcome!

Ever since I bought my 128i, there’s been a nagging sense that something’s missing. The U.S.-spec car gets an “e-diff”—basically an open differential that taps the brakes to keep you from doing less-than-glorious one-tire fires. It’s fine for grocery runs, but it’s more helicopter pare...

🚗💸 Thinking About Building a Track Car? Read This First. 🛠️🏁

After dumping way too much time, money, and energy into the track car rabbit hole, I decided to put everything I’ve learned into one big post—what to consider before you build, what to buy first, where to start racing, and when it actually makes more sense to just buy a built car.

Whether you’re eyeing your first HPDE, wondering what autocross is all about, or knee-deep in coilover spreadsheets, this is for you.

I cover:
✅ Choosing the right entry point (HPDE, autocross, competition)
✅ What upgrades actually matter
✅ The brutal truth about costs
✅ How classing works and what to watch out for
✅ Factory track packages that might save you $$$
✅ And the million-dollar question: Build or Buy?

If you’ve ever asked yourself “Where do I even start?” or “How deep down this rabbit hole do I really want to go?”—this might help.

Let me know what you think—or share your own build/buy story below. I’d love to hear how others are navigating this madness.

After sinking an embarrassing amount of time, money, and energy into the track car rabbit hole, I figured it was time to share what I’ve actually learned. There’s no shortage of advice out there—everyone has an opinion on building or tracking a car—but how much of it really applies to your g...
