" Six years ago, the Pennsylvania attorney general sued a group of tow-truck operators for allegedly towing cars unlawfully — and then using intimidation tactics, including the threat of a pit-bull attack, to pressure car owners to pay excessive fees.
Now, the office’s Bureau of Consumer Protection says the companies violated the terms of a 2022 consent order settling that lawsuit, and has asked a Philadelphia judge to find them in contempt.
The contempt petition, filed Sept. 2 in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia, seeks about $220,000 in penalties and restitution from the companies, Siani’s Towing and Recovery, Angelina’s Towing and Recovery, and Aubry’s Towing, which all operate out of the same address in North Philadelphia.
“The terms of this settlement were very clear, yet these companies continue to improperly tow consumers’ vehicles, and charge exorbitant fees,” Attorney General Dave Sunday said in a statement. “Predatory towing is a scourge that causes tremendous anguish and financial burden for the vehicles’ owners, and will not be tolerated.”
A person who answered the phone at the company hung up when contacted by a reporter.
According to the contempt petition, the Bureau of Consumer Protection has received 38 complaints about the towing companies’ conduct since the 2022 settlement.
Among them: The companies had persisted in towing peoples’ cars from spots not marked with proper signage, charging fees higher than what’s allowed by law, and harassing car owners who complained that their cars had been damaged while they were towed.
Some of the drivers were residents of apartment buildings, parking in the building lot with permission, when their cars were towed from their homes, according to the filing. "

" The Los Angeles Police Department and multiple other agencies responded in droves early Saturday to reports of an illegal street takeover in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood of L.A. near Gardena.
Several cars filled the streets around South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard, where police told OnScene.TV they’d towed about 160 vehicles, made dozens of arrests and located six guns. "

The mural features Mater, a rusty brown tow truck, and Sarge, a 1941 Willys Army Jeep, both characters from “Cars.”
“When we built the new building, I originally wanted to put a mural on the side because it is such a big building, so I figured it would be nice to have a mural,” explained Todd Ayers. “But we wound up putting up a fence which blocked the side.” "

Following that crash, about one mile away, a wrecker headed to the scene from Bad Axe smashed into a fire truck that was parked and blocking the access to the first crash scene, according to police. "

" MERRITT TWP, MI — Tow trucks typically arrive at crash scenes after the damage has been done to haul away the wreckage. But in rural Bay County, a tow truck driver is alleged to have caused a crash then fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.
Sheriff’s deputies are seeking the public’s help in identifying and locating the truck’s driver.
The afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 3, a 56-year-old woman was driving a silver 2023 Chevrolet Traverse along East Munger Road/M-138 in Merritt Township. About 2 p.m., a white flatbed tow truck ran the stop sign at the intersection with South Farley Road, striking the Traverse, according to deputies. "

" Kevin Froese is not an activist. He’s just a father. But a tow truck, a steep bill, and a distressed daughter was a call to action.
His daughter’s car was towed from TransLink’s Port Moody Park and Ride on Aug. 17, a lot managed by Impark.
“She called her mom, upset,” said Froese. His 23-year-old daughter had a couple of unpaid parking infractions.
“The tow was justified, and we don’t dispute that,” said Froese.
Her car was being held at the Benjamin Towing impound lot in Port Coquitlam. But when they got there, the office was closed. “No lights, and the signage says they close at 5 p.m.,” said Froese. "
