California-

" The West Hollywood City Council will consider directing staff Monday to review the city’s most frequently towed locations in an effort to reduce the financial burden on drivers while maintaining parking enforcement in areas where towing is necessary.
The proposal, introduced by Mayor John Heilman, calls for staff to identify locations with high towing activity and recommend improvements such as enhanced signage, better lighting or other measures to make parking restrictions more visible. Staff would also evaluate valet zones that are no longer in use and determine whether they should be removed or modified. "

" A Kentucky appeals court threw out a nearly $164 million verdict against GEICO, ruling that the insurer cannot be held vicariously liable for the negligence of a tow truck driver subcontracted by the insurer.
The Kentucky Court of Appeals issued its opinion Friday in GEICO Casualty Company v. Jilianne Warner, a case arising from a December 2017 crash in Louisville, Kentucky. Christian Worley, an employee of Midnight Recovery, a Sellersburg, Indiana-based towing company, rear-ended Ms. Warner’s stopped vehicle at roughly 65 mph to 70 mph while responding to a GEICO roadside assistance call. Mr. Worley admitted his negligence caused the crash, which left Ms. Warner, then 27, quadriplegic.
A Jefferson Circuit Court jury awarded Ms. Warner nearly $164 million in damages, finding GEICO vicariously liable under a legal theory that towing is an “inherently dangerous” activity exempt from the usual rule shielding companies from liability for independent contractors’ actions. "

" WEST READING, Pa. – Roadside assistance workers face danger every time they respond to a stranded driver. Now, a new Pennsylvania law will help to make them more visible.
Monday, Gov. Josh Shapiro signed legislation allowing roadside assistance vehicles to use “flashing blue safety lights” while stopped on the side of the road.
Whether it's a flat tire, dead battery or lockout — every roadside call puts technicians just feet from speeding traffic. Supporters say the blue lights will help drivers see them sooner. "

" STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — A tow truck driver is dead after crashing into the driver of a semi tractor in Sterling Heights early Tuesday morning.
Police say that the crash happened at the intersection of southbound Mound Road at Dobry Drive.
Investigators said that the driver of the tractor was heading south on Mound Road and was going through a green light when the tow truck driver ran the red light at Mound. The two vehicles collided, with the tow truck driver being ejected from the vehicle.
After life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the tow truck driver, a 29-year-old from Detroit, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi tractor driver refused medical treatment at the scene.
The Sterling Heights Police Department is investigating the crash, and we're told that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident. If you have any information on this incident, contact Traffic Specialist Officer Halapi at [email protected] or (586)446-2924. "

" The Prince George’s County Council approved legislation last week that would make it easier for family members of those detained by ICE to retrieve their cars from impound lots.
The bill was introduced by Eric Olson, vice chair of the council.
“When people are detained by ICE, often it’s out of cars and/or other vehicles, and then those vehicles just get abandoned by the side of the road,” Olson said.
In instances where a vehicle is considered “abandoned” it gets towed to an impound lot. Currently, only the vehicle’s registered owner, or someone authorized by the owner with a signed and notarized letter, can retrieve the car. "

The Prince George’s County Council approved legislation last week that would make it easier for family members of those detained by ICE to retrieve their cars from impound lots, following passage of a similar law in Montgomery County.
