It’s been almost 5 years without measurable snow In the DFW area. Just a reminder that we still have around 2 months to go. This snowfall was on March 21, 2010.

Enjoy the weather for the next 5 days! But don’t let these temperatures fool you. The greatest snowfall on record at DFW occurred on February 11, 2010 (11.2 inches). The next year Dallas gave the cold shoulder to the NFL for the 2011 Super Bowl. February is historically the month with the most snow in DFW averaging almost an inch.

Twenty years ago this morning I woke up, got ready for work, and drove down a different road than I had ever driven before. I was driving to meet with the employees at my new job. With the help of family, friends and business associates I started Eagle Oak Landscape. I still remember praying the entire drive that first morning; praying that the Lord would watch over my employees and keep them safe; that I would be able to provide stability not only for my family, but for the families of my employees. The drive was frightening and exciting all in one. With hard work, wonderful employees, and great clients and supported by the blessings of a faithful Lord, Eagle Oak has grown to be a successful company. The drive today is just like it was 20 years ago, but very comforting to know that I drive with so many friends and a loving God!

Why you should stop considering roses for your landscape.

Garden Tip: If you are in DFW, you may be all too well aware of the impact the fatal rose rosette virus has had on (primarily) Metroplex roses these past several years. I commented to a friend in San Angelo a few months ago that I haven't smelled a rose garden in our town in more than two years.

I have archived the critical details and left them on the home page of my website for the past many months. However, many gardeners are still not aware of this disease. Here is a link to that information: http://neilsperry.com/notes/2015/03/rose-rosette-disease/

Many of you have commented here in recent weeks that you still have roses blooming. I took these photos in Allen late this afternoon. At first glance, you might be cheered by the fact that they're in bloom into the New Year. However, these are Knockouts that are badly infested with rosette. I've been watching them for many months, plus the ultra-thorny stems are the added giveaway.

This virus is fatal. Infected plants should be dug, put into trash bags and sent to the landfill, and it should be done as soon as possible – before the spring growing season. There is no means of controlling rosette, either by attempting to kill the microscopic airborne mites that spread the disease or by spraying the plant. Pruning to eliminate the obviously damaged portions is of no value at all, yet that's what so many landscape contractors do rather than facing the music that the plants they're maintaining need to be replaced with something other than roses. (No, I don't know of any other plant that is a close tradeoff. We need to rethink our garden designs – please see the linked page for those comments.)

So I'm sorry to bring this disturbing news up again, but hundreds of you have continued to ask. Unfortunately, I can't really ID rosette for sure in this setting, so please don't post a bunch of photos asking for that help. It's just too difficult at this almost-dormant time of the year.

During the winter it is difficult to find flowers for your flower pots that do not receive much sunlight. Over the years, I have found cyclamen to be a dependable flower for low light. Cyclamen does best when kept at an even moisture level; not too wet, not too dry. It is best to keep from watering directly on top of the plant. Cyclamen does not do as well in beds, and seems to prefer protection from direct heavy rainfall.
