Here's something that we see quite often. The sound suppressing foam that's used inside engine covers and outboard motor cowlings . This stuff will degrade over time. When these engines, outboards & inboards, are running at WOT or even half throttle, the air being drawn in through the intake is massive . They're like a huge vacuum cleaner turned on . Anything that gets close to these intakes is gonna be sucked straight into the engine. When this stuff starts deteriorating it can cause bilge pump and automatic float switch failures as well. I've seen many times where it builds up around a float switch and can cause it not to turn a bilge pump on . I've also seen it hang a float switch open causing the pump to run continuously and killing the battery. We have a customer that was going through bilge pumps every year it seemed like. After the third one we realized it was coming from the foam inside is engine compartment. We've had 4 boats in the past month that we removed this insulation from and that's the reason for this post . Just a heads-up.
PS. For those who feel the urge to comment "that's the purpose of an air filter " , for the most part true. However a majority of marine engines don't run air filters . They use what is known as a flame arrestor aka , spark arrestor. Yes these will capture alot of it but nowhere close to what is needed . Happy father's day yall ✌️

These are the kinda jobs I love doing. We partnered up with Waccawachee Marina on this older Searay 245 that a family brought with them when they moved here from NY. It had a old tired Mercruiser 5.0 carbureted engine with a Bravo 2 drive. It needed alota work , engine , transom and outdrive. Almost everything we looked at had some degree of attention needed. The general manager put together a package that turned out adding a huge amount of value to this man's boat.
We started by removing the engine assembly , transom and drive assembly along with other things like trim pump , bilge pump, float switch along with wiring and harnesses. We gutted the whole aft end of this boat. After a good cleaning and degrease, 3 coats of interlux bilge kote paint was put down in the bottom engine compartment . Understanding the 5.0 liters are becoming hard to come by, a package deal was put together to go back with a brand new Mercruiser 5.7 mpi paired to a brand new Aftermarket transom and a Bravo 3 drive. While removing the transom assembly we found the inner transom plate broken at the bottom section of the plate. This is what the rear engine mounts bolt to . We found the exhaust flappers in the Y-pipe were complete trash. There was nothing left to these. The trim pump bracket was so badly rusted we could bump the pump assembly and it'd just fall over backwards. We found lots of wiring connectors and harness problems that we couldn't see prior. The outer transom assembly and Bravo 2 drive was in just about the same condition. This rig would've likely run good for a while however we've seen enough of these to know, this boat would've constantly been in need of some type of attention and break downs throughout the entire season. We set it in water today for the maiden voyage and it couldn't have gone any better. He had a Bravo 2 unit which is a single wheel drive and as mentioned we went back with a B3 unit which has the duel propeller gearcase. After some discussion and formulas we decided to go with the B3 20 pitch propellers and it worked beautifully. This engine is rated for 4800 to 5200 rpms at WOT (wide open throttle) . Although we never recommend running boats WOT all the time , let alone a brand new engine and drive that needs to go through a break in process , we do it in short bursts for testing. As you can see in one of these videos , we were spot on with our gear ratio and propeller size (20 pitch) . Other than just a little clean up and reattaching the engine cowling , this one is ready to go. Id like to add , not one tool was needed on this run. Not one adjustment was required. Man this could not have turned out any better.
Id also like to add , there's not one fancy stereo system or multiple ceramic coatings or hull wraps on the outside that will come close to adding the value that a repower adds when it comes to an older vessel . Big thank you to Matt Schwartz , general manager for Waccawachee Marina for putting this all together. I know the owner is gonna be extremely happy with how this all turned out.
Here's a little glimpse of what went into this repower. If anyone has a boat they truly love, maybe sentimental to a family , that's gotta tired engine and drive , or just needs a lot of attention , here's a good option for you and your family. With the cost of new boats now days , a repower is the way to go.
I'll have to post the still shots in another post I think. It's saying I can't post a video along with pictures. Im doing something wrong because I see lots of posts with videos and still shots.

Hi! I’m Emily, Craig’s daughter and Jacks sister.

I was going through some old photos tonight and I thought I would share some from the early years of Deese Marine Service over at the old warehouse on Lakeside Dr.

Growing up, this place was heaven. While dad worked on boats and mom ran the office the old warehouse was mine and Jacks kingdom to explore. From drag racing Barbie Jeeps and Jeff Gordon race cars (which dad had souped up to be like 3x as fast as they should’ve been lol), to finding golf balls the neighbor had tossed over the fence, learning to ride my bike and roller skate (not well), “scanning” the perimeter of the yard in whatever mode of transportation we could find, sometimes a bike, Barbie Jeep, golf cart, or my moms Buick Lesabre, which I almost crashed into the end of the storage part once. Don’t tell her that.

We found birds nests, and tad poles, and fiberglass. When your dad says “That’s fiberglass, DO NOT touch it” he has a good reason, and you probably shouldn’t touch it. One of the many lessons learned over there.

My dance studio even moved into the other half of the building and every time dad would rev an engine I’d tell the girl beside me, “this is my dad’s shop, we work on boats.” I’m sure they didn’t care, but I was proud.

We ate popsicles from the kitchen when it would get too hot, and crackers from Mr. Genes old school lance cracker machine inside the building (which I still think was the coolest thing ever) when dad refused to take us to the gas station down the road in his “big green thumb” (his Ford dually that I loved so much). Mom would pack lunch, and sometimes dinner, and we would eat over there while dad worked late, or waited for a customer to drop off or pick up their boats.

Jack and I learned how to engage with people over there, even as young kids. Watching mom and dad interact with customers and friends who stopped by shaped us in ways that we still carry today.

I’m sure some of you were around back then, and I want to thank you. Thank you for helping us build something, for giving me and Jack a place to roam and explore and learn. I miss that place and those days and I’m thankful they happened. That my dad is a whiz when it comes to boats and engines and Barbie Jeep batteries and my mom encouraged us to go and play and explore and didn’t care if I drove her Buick LeSabre at 8 years old.

Thank you for being our customers, then and now. Our family appreciates you.
