Cicadas? What cicadas? The children have never heard of these fascinating critters! We found some exoskeletons on the playground and that sparked a whole new little mini study! We found many of the cicada stuck to the trees on the playground. We then were looking on the ground and found a body of one and many beautiful wings. The children were in awe of the wings and loved counting the exoskeleton! We even found one on Miss Mindy's shoe when we got back from our walk! When we returned to the classroom we used the Smart-board to find out how the exoskeleton happens and the noise they make! It was interesting to find out that some people eat them!

E. Support - Asking for Help
16.2 PK.E
Ask for and accept offers of help when needed or appropriate.

During our Incredible Years lessons we learn how to manage our feelings, how to use our words, how to make good choices, and how to control our emotions. Today we talked about ways to help at home and in the classroom. The teachers had helpers pass out crayons and paper so we could trace our hands and talk about how to help in the classroom. We have a wonderful group of helpers in our classroom. The children love to help, so if you need little things done at home allow them to help. Not only will you have less work to do, you are training your child to become a productive citizen that is helpful and like to do tasks. So when you need laundry folded, socks matched, tables wipes, toys picked up put a different spin on it! Ask your child to help you and watch what happens. If it feels more like helping mommy and daddy instead of chores they are more likely to help instead of fight with you! Make sure you praise them for being a good helper too! A simple hug and a kiss will make a child smile from ear to ear!

How do we learn you ask? We use technology to work and learn.
The smart board is a great learning tool when used. We start out by learning to refine our gross motor skills which in turn help our fine motor skills. The students love using the smart board to work and learn. The students can fine tune their drawing skills, sort objects into groups, learn to count and use 1-1 correspondence when counting. We not only learn on the smart board, but we also learn proper use and care of our devices.

How do Preschool Students learn the letters in the alphabet you ask? We learn them hands on training style. We use Handwriting With Out Tears Curriculum and tools in our classrooms. Here we are working to learn the parts of the letters by making the letters with wooden pieces. We learn the parts of the letter, how to write the letter, the name of the letter, the sound of the letter. We are very busy all year learning and working on letter skills with our wooden letter pieces.

Some of the directions were: "Place 3 red token infront of the bin", "Place two green tokens in front of the bin". The students enjoyed working together to accomplish this task. The students were able to stay on task and follow the directions that were given.

We watch videos of how to brush our teeth. We even talk about what happens if we don't brush our teeth! We talk about if all of our teeth fall out we will have to eat baby food everyday. The children work very hard at learning to brush their teeth, spit in their cup, and scrub their faces!

Today we played the game Zingo. This is a great game for object recognition, using words to express needs (claiming the game token), and learning to take turns, wait patiently, and how to play a game. Today we put a spin on how to claim a game piece. I gave the children a rhyme for the object and they had to identify the rhyme and object to get their token.

WE HAD 20 RHYMES today! ! ! This is so awesome to have this many rhymes in such a young group of children. The students were calling out rhymes faster than the teachers could identify them. We are so proud of the students for learning to rhyme so fast and efficiently

Tuesday Miss Mindy made groups of two and WE got to use our classroom blocks to follow along with the story and build just like Jack did.

When Miss Mindy read the words in the story we had to count the parts to Jacks structure and then go by the pieces from Miss Debbie in the block area. Our payment was using the correct number and shape. If we were correct Miss Debbie gave us our block pieces. We then had to go back to our group and use our eyes to match the block structure to Jack in the story.

Recognize and describe the attributes of geometric figures.

We work everyday on learning not just basic shapes like Jack used but also shapes that we see all around us. Jack used cylinders and we see cylinders in our classroom everyday. Jack used a cube, a rectangle, flat rectangle. Jack also used a cone, we see cones around all the time. We used birthday hats because we noticed that is what a cone looks like!!!!!

The children explored different ways to use these trays in the classroom. They asked if they could build with them. I asked a couple questions before we began building.

1. Will they stack they way you want them to? The kids answered: Not sure! I said let's try.

2. Will it be safe to stack them in the classroom? Answer from the kids: Well if we keep our friends away from where we are stacking them it will be safe. They are made from smooth plastic so they are not heavy.

3. How are you going to accomplish your goal? From the pictures you can see it took several tries, but they accomplished a lot. It was questioned by one of the children if they could reach the ceiling. By working together with the kids and the teachers they realized that the ceiling is not as far away as we thought. We even had a few extra trays to use. The best part was when it fell down and we could try again.

4. When our tower fell down what could make it better? the students answered: If you have a wide base you can make a taller tower! Which indeed we did!

When we came to school after the big snowstorm and realized there were big mounds of snow everywhere to play in, we had to see how tall the snow was. Miss Mindy showed the children that she got 36 inches of snow at her house. Did you know 36 inches is 3 feet the same as one yardstick. So the children predicted if they were taller or smaller than the yardstick. After everyone predicted we then measured everyone against the yardstick!
