Most people see this and think it’s just another Fox Body.

It isn’t. 👀

This is a 1982 Mercury Capri IMSA race car, one of the most distinctive Fox platform race cars ever built. Driven by racing pioneer Lyn St. James, the Capri competed during an era when IMSA’s GT classes produced some of the wildest silhouette race cars in North America.

Compared to its Mustang counterpart, the Capri featured its own unique front-end styling, wider front fenders, aggressive widebody flares, and enormous side-exit exhaust pipes that left no doubt this car was built for one thing: racing.

Under the skin, these cars were purpose-built road race machines, with lightweight construction, massive racing slicks, aerodynamic bodywork, and V8 power that made them a force on the track.

The Mercury Capri may have lived in the Mustang’s shadow on the street, but on the race track it carved out a legacy all its own.
