Weā€™ve been slowing down and enjoying summertime over here!

Some days it does look like lots of time in the sewing shed getting quilts worked on, but a lot of times it looks like this: making sure we slow down to enjoy the quilts that get made! Whether itā€™s for lounging on the front porch, a comfy place to eat watermelon in the shade, or making a quilt fort inside to stay out of the Mississippi heat, we bring our quilts along on most all our activities and adventures!

Quilts in use are my favorite kinds of quilts, and we are all about it in The Back Porch Stitcher household šŸ„¹šŸ„°

I got to longarm this beautiful quilt for a sweet friend of mine!

Not only is this her first bed size quilt sheā€™s ever made, but she did it all on her dining room table with three little boys running around (and one little girl on the way!). Thatā€™s a true superhero in my books!

We got together for a play date so I could help her with the binding, which of course was 95% little boy chaos and 5% actual quilting šŸ¤£

This has got to be one of the most intricate quilts Iā€™ve gotten to longarm! When I tell you my jaw DROPPED when I saw this quiltā€¦!

I love everything about it from the fabric to the pattern! The customer wanted a simple pantograph so it wouldnā€™t compete too much with the quilt pattern itself.

I have 100% convinced myself that I am mostly definitely adding this quilt to my ā€œmust makeā€list immediately!

What a beautiful and special quilt to get to work on!

A sweet woman from our church had these blocks that were made by her mother in the 1940s (she said she could remember her mom working on these blocks!). The blocks sat around for years and years, never getting finished into a quilt.
I was asked if I could turn the blocks into a quilt and I love how it turned out! I was able to find a fun pink reproduction fabric that matched the 1940s blocks so well. And my customer requested minky for the backing and I love the fun color we chose!

Add a fun floral pantograph and a quilt label, and itā€™s the perfect touch šŸ„°šŸ’–

Itā€™s always fun to do a little introduction, especially with so many new faces around here!

I love to share the quilting projects Iā€™m working on and the chaos thatā€™s usually surrounding me while I create! Quilting looks a lot different now with three little ones than it did 5 years ago, but itā€™s so sweet and I love capturing the memories šŸ’–

While a lot of my quilting these days are centered around customer projects (usually T-shirt quilts, memory quilts, and longarming!), after I had Eloise, Iā€™ve tried to be more intentional about quilting for myself too šŸ’–

ā€œBesides, of what use are storybooks to women who work in the fields and milk cows? All the more reason I say, why a farm woman should escape for a few minutes into a make-believe world where her spirit may be eased.ā€

Iā€™m a couple of weeks behind on my quilt along that I am doing with Canary Quilts, but Iā€™m trying to get back on track to do Week 3 on Friday! This is a year long quilt along as I attempt to make a quilt with a book Iā€™ve had on my shelf for YEARS!

This was my first attempt at paper piecing (except for one small block I tried about 7 years ago), and she isnā€™t perfect, but I love her! Carrie has been putting together WONDERFUL videos every week that made every single hesitation or worry I had about paper piecing disappear! Iā€™m excited to keep practicing paper piecing, and I also am glad this is a week by week quilt along so I donā€™t get too overwhelmed along the way šŸ˜…

The best part of this quilt is reading the stories that go along with each block. For those unfamiliar with the book, it is a collection of stories written by farmerā€™s wives in the 1930s. These stories all came from ā€œThe Farmerā€™s Wifeā€ magazine, and were part of the ā€œLetters from our Farm Womenā€ section. This section was where readers would write letters to send in to give encouragement, advice, and support to other farmerā€™s wives who were struggling during the Great Depression. This quilt book took those stories and assigned a quilt block to each story.

This week was Aimeeā€™s story who shared her love of reading and the comfort it can bring to a farmerā€™s wife. I may not be a farmerā€™s wife myself, but I completely agree with Aimeeā€™s love of books, and also find myself ā€œsaving penniesā€ to acquire a new book to read šŸ’–

Iā€™ve got a couple of behind the scenes videos of the makings of this quilt that I may end up sharingā€¦ but I couldnā€™t resist just sharing the finished quilt!! šŸ˜

I did in fact get it done by the 4th (just barely!). A couple of midnight sewing nights and finishing the binding the 4th of July morning šŸ¤£

Garrett was busy serving up ice cream, lemonade, and snow cones for Mississippi State Parks 250 celebration at John Kyle State Park, but me and the boys got to enjoy our quilt for a little while before the live music got rained out! Still a fun time šŸ„°
