As another Memorial Day comes, I am reminded of a quote from Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address. President Lincoln stated, “The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here”. This always strikes me as such an accurate quote, since there truly is little we can do or say that will come close to acknowledging the sacrifice of others made on behalf of us.
As someone pursuing a career as a park ranger at a Civil War Battlefield, I find Memorial Day to be one of our most important and sadly most overlooked “holidays”, although I hesitate to call it that.
On the last Monday of May, we do not celebrate a government, a politician, or a political ideology. We remember those who took it upon themselves to sacrifice their future for our present without asking for anything in return. I hope everyone takes a moment today to just remember and appreciate what has been done for our own prosperity.
