Just realized it's been forever since I posted an update. Hard at work with a lot of life changes. But today I'm hand polishing some pieces that would be difficult to do with a polisher. A lot of little pieces finally coming together. 🔥

Here is a front fender extension from a 1970 Mustang that needed repaired. They have a weak tab that the front valance mounts to. This tab is almost always broken off. The piece is made of some sort of pot metal which generally can't be welded like steel or aluminum.

The repair starts by cleaning down to bare metal. (In this case sand blasting.) Then you drill out the end of the crack to keep it from going further as well as grinding a bevel for the filling material. Then it was soldered with a product called Muggy Weld. Soldering used a rod that melts at a lower temperature than the metal you are fixing. Next the solder is filed and sanded smooth. Then is was blasted againg for a consistent surface.

Next comes the actual broken off tab. I happens enough that there is a stronger repair tab able to purchase online. It's a strong steel piece. You then prep the surface and use panel bond adhesive to "glue" it on; using vice grips to hold it in the specific location until cured. Finally it can sanded smooth followed by several stages of primer before paint.

Now here's an example of restoring gauges for your classic car.

As you can see the gauge face is in good shape but the case has some surface rust on it from mice getting on top and doing what they do. Then it's time for disassembly, sandblasting to remove any rust, and painting. Some clusters use the case as a ground so you have to take special care or you eisk your gauges not working when youre done. For those that spare no expense, the case should be re-plated instead of painted. In this instance a quality paint will be fine and the case is not used for a ground. The outside gets a shade of silver while the inside is white. The white inside the case helps the light quality of the gauge so you can see at night time. The blue lenses give this gauge the hue that it's gauges are supposed to have.

Another example of time consuming details. If you've ever wonder how stainless steel trim is repaired on cars, here is a case study.

One of several pieces that go around the rear window of a car. This one has a pretty decent kink in it as well as some scratches and small dents. The first three pictures show the "before condition of the piece. The next pictures are as follows:

4-5. Carefully hammering/bending the trim to have the right curve. It needs to be checked against the car to make sure it fits right. This step takes some major finesse and you can easily damage the piece badly with one wrong blow of the hammer. This fixes the major issues with the part but leaves a scuffed surface.

6.Using a small file to get small but rough dents out.

7.Sanding the filed area and anywhere else that needs it with 180grit sandpaper.

8. Sanding with 220 grit.
9. 320 grit
10. 400 grit From here on it is wet sanding.
11. 600 grit
12. 800 grit
13. 1000 grit
14. 1500 grit
15. 2000 grit Now typically you can get away with finishing the part out with a buffing wheel and compound. (Which is what all these pieces will get.) But since not everybody has one of those I thought I'd show finishing it by hand.
16. 3000 grit wet sand.
17-19. Metal polish by hand to nearly mirror finish.

20. The rest of the pieces for the car needing done. There are some pieces that you don't have to go through all of those steps. Usually you start with the least invasive step you can get away with.
