Five years ago Dirk and I cooked up a wild idea: get the TrailRecon community out to one canyon for a weekend and see what happens. Now we are getting ready to kick off TrailRecon Summit 5, our 5th years! This will be the best one yet.

October 8–11, we're taking over MERUS Adventure Park on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon. Four challenge tracks, so it doesn't matter if you're airing down for the first time or you run 37s and lockers there's a line with your name on it. Guided trail runs, hands on training, a Texas BBQ, and the kind of campfire stories you only get when the rigs are dirty and nobody's in a hurry to call it a night. https://bit.ly/TrailReconSummit5

Back in 1879, a group of pioneers was asked to do something that still doesn't seem possible, leave everything behind and build a wagon road through some of the most unforgiving country in the West. 250 people, 83 wagons, and a trip they figured would take six weeks. It took them six months.

I took the Jeep and ST5 down the Hole in the Rock trail outside Escalante, Utah, to retrace part of that route myself, washboard, slickrock, shelf roads, and a whole lot of respect for the folks who did it the hard way, with no road at all.

It ended in a way I wasn't expecting, standing in front of one of those old wagons. I won't spoil it.

Go give it a watch. And tell me honestly: could you have made that trek in 1879?

Memorial Day always brings me back to CE3 Charles Komppa, who served with my unit in Fallujah and was killed in action on October 25, 2006. I wear this black band in his honor. Today is for him, and for the families and fellow Seabees still carrying the weight of that loss.
