Don't wear watches, belts, rings or other jewelry while polishing a car. Here's why:

When you're polishing a car, you'll likely have to bend your body over certain panels like the roof or the hood in order to reach the far end with your polisher.

When you do this, it becomes very easy for things like belts, watches and rings to scratch the paint.

Best practice is to just remove these things ahead of time so you don't have to worry about whether your watch is brushing up against the paint.

🤔 What direction should you polish in?

Generally speaking, when you're buffing on a large, horizontal panel like hood or roof, it's best to start in the middle of the panel, then work your way out.

If you were to start from the edge and work your way in, you could accidentally brush up against the paint as you lean over and scratch the part you just polished.

Pad conditioners... should you use them?

says they're not necessary, and could actually slow you down. Here's why:

It's better to prime your pad by spreading the product out over your working area at a low speed than to bog it down with liquid before it even hits the paint.

Dry pads rotate faster than wet pads simply because they weigh less. By priming or conditioning the pad with a spray detailer or other solution, you're just helping the pad get wetter faster.

It may not be enough to seriously affect your working speed, but it's definitely not helping either!

⬇️ Apply 5 pounds of downward pressure when polishing.

If you don't apply enough pressure, the abrasives and the pad won't remove enough material from the clear coat to level the paint to the lowest point of the defects in question.

Don't be afraid of burning the paint. Applying pressure is normal and is the only way to get the results you're looking for.

Clear coats are thin. If you don't do a proper test spot when polishing, it could fail entirely. Let Mike Phillips in this video.

More polish doesn't mean more cut. In fact, the opposite is often true.

The polishing pad actually gets heavier the more and more you load it with product. Heavy, saturated pads don't rotate as well, which slows down your correction speed.

Use just enough product to get good lubrication and even coverage over the working area. Don't keep using the same pad across the whole vehicle. Swap in a fresh pad when your current one gets saturated to avoid too much product building up inside the foam.

Here's why advises AGAINST using polisher handles...

While a handle may seem like a helpful feature, it actually makes polishing HARDER than it needs to be.

With a stick handle, it tends to pull you to one side, which makes it hard to keep the pad flat on the surface and maintain good rotation.

With a hoop handle, you're actually making the tool more difficult to control as your hand is farther away from the tool itself, which can wear your muscles out more easily.

These things can seem intuitive at first, but in practice, they actually hurt your form, especially if you're a beginner. Just stick to holding one hand on the base and the other hand on the head. There's a reason you see the pros do this... it's because it works.
