Following the rest of the industry, MG has also decided to increase the prices due to the recent sales tax increase on HS Hybrid and Super Hybrid. However, unlike most other manufacturers, the company hasn’t implemented the increase immediately, instead rolling it out in phases.

Reason for the Increase
To be clear, this price increase has nothing to do with MG raising the base price of its cars. It’s solely a result of the sales tax hike that has hit hybrid vehicles across the industry.

Hybrid vehicles previously enjoyed a discounted sales tax rate of 8.5 percent. That concession expired on June 30, 2026, and since the government didn’t announce an extension, hybrids reverted by default to the standard 25 percent sales tax.

This is why most manufacturers with hybrid models in their lineup, including Chery, Toyota, Suzuki, Honda, and Hyundai, have recently increased prices on their hybrid variants to adjust for the new tax. Some manufacturers are passing on the full impact to customers, while others are absorbing anywhere between 20 to 50 percent of the amount themselves, depending on the manufacturer.

(PAAPAM) has submitted a position paper to the government, advocating for higher customs duties on imported completely built units (CBUs) and localized parts, while urging zero or minimal duties on raw materials to protect domestic manufacturing and encourage local production.

Auto Policy 2026-31: Proposed Tariff Structure
The association argues that the National Tariff Policy 2025-30, which seeks to reduce import duties to a uniform maximum of 15 percent, poses significant risks to local component makers. According to PAAPAM, domestic parts manufacturers face a 34 percent structural cost disadvantage due to high energy tariffs, high financing rates, complex taxes, expensive freight, and logistics inefficiencies.

To address these imbalances, PAAPAM has proposed a specific tier of customs duties under the Auto Policy 2026-31:

Completely Built Units (CBUs): 50 percent import duty
Localized Auto Parts: 40 percent import duty
Completely Knocked Down (CKD) Kits: 30 percent import duty
Locally Available Raw Materials: 5 percent import duty
Imported Raw Materials (not produced locally): 0 percent duty
