Tow truck drivers after fellow driver hit: 'Move over and slow down.'

For Randy Capps of Weil Wrecker, Friday was just another day on the job. However, it was a tough day for him. Thursday, a co-worker of his was on patrol and stopped to help a disabled vehicle on Highway 280. The driver was later hit by a car. For Capps and others, Thursday served as a harsh reality....

🤬😡This isn't another state, another company, someone you don't know. This is a local company.
THIS HAPPENED ON RED MOUNTAIN EXPRESSWAY/280.
Many of you drive this area every day. These tow operators are someone's family. Someone's wife, husband, sister, brother, mom, dad, child.
GIVE US THE ROOM WE NEED TO WORK. SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER!
Prayers go out to this operator and his family. Prayers also with his co-workers and industry brothers and sisters as they continue to do their jobs answering the call to help others, with this in the back of their minds.

This morning one of our drivers was struck by a vehicle on the side of the road while assisting a stranded motorist. It's a serious injury, and we ask you to join us in praying for him and his family. Pray for all our drivers today as they also deal with this accident and continue to face danger every time they work on the side of the road.

We take every opportunity to remind the public to slow down and move over. It's a state law, and today, failure to follow that law resulted in the injury of one of our own. The truth is it's always one of our own - no matter what company, state, or country - when a tow operator is struck by traffic just trying to do their job. Today's accident is close to home, and we're all struggling with the shock.

Help us keep our operators safe: Slow Down - Move Over. Be alert and free of distractions while you drive. We can train our drivers to be as safe as possible, but we can't protect them from accidents like this without your help.

Wide open road, police blocking, and still the driver is hit. Every single day we work the roads with "D" drivers:
Drunk, Distracted, or just plain Dumb.
We are people too. OUR LIVES MATTER TOO!
You call us when you're in need. Police call us to clear their roadways. Respect us, and respect our work space. SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER and don't be a "D" driver!

MOVE OVER: TWO STATE TROOPERS HIT ALONG INTERSTATE

This has got to stop! This is absolutely ridiculous! What is it that makes people think that their text, phone call, makeup or whatever they have to be is that much more important than someone's LIFE?!?
PUT THE PHONE DOWN. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.
SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE FIGHTERS, TOW OPERATORS AND HIGHWAY WORKERS.
Next time you wonder why we shut down a whole lane of traffic just to clean up a fender bender on the shoulder......... remember these articles. We have to do what we have to do to make sure WE are able to go home to our families at the end of the day. We're out here helping YOU after a breakdown or accident. We are here for YOU. Respect us and our work space.

(Tuscaloosa County) - This morning (2-17-19) at about 4 am. Wayne’s Body Shop wrecker driver Phillip James and an Alabama State Trooper were struck on I 20/59 South Bound at mile marker 89 (Mercedes exit). Jame received a badly bruised leg, but should be ok. The Trooper had no injuries but his SUV totaled. Could have been a lot worse! #SlowDownMoveOver

Heads up!! New area code coming to our area! I'm sure with cell phones most dial the full 10 digit number now without realizing it, but be aware, soon it will be required!!

#NewAreaCode - New info from AT&T regarding an additional area code to our area!!! #AreaCode659

The new area code, in addition to the 205 which will NOT change, is 659. This is to accommodate additional phone numbers in our area. Starting April 13, 2019 during a transition period, you will need to include the area code of the person you are dialing instead of just the 7-digit code you may be used to. After October 12, 2019, calls will not go through if they don't include the area code prefix within this area.

This will NOT affect 911, 311, 211, 811 or any other three-digit numbers.

AT&T says, according to their media release (image attached) that your number will not change, but people will need to dial the 205/659 plus the 7-digit number to get to you, as you will need to dial to get to them beginning in April. Please look over this information provided by AT&T for additional answers. Other services, such as fax machines, some life-safety machines that auto-dial, security systems, PBXs and others may need to be updated.

If you have further questions, please contact AT&T at 1-800-288-2020 or go to their website www.att.com, however we found that information to be less than helpful. The direct site to this information is https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/local-long-distance/KM1212596?gsi=Ay0k1oqb

PRAYER WARRIORS:
Please continue to lift Bill up in your prayers. He is currently not doing well. This is the latest update we have received:

Update on Bill!

I don’t really know how to put this without scaring everyone... He doesn’t seem to be responding to the bronchodilator the way they want him to. Last night they told us that past this, there is nothing more they can do for him because of how critical he is. This morning they told us there is a good chance he won’t survive this. Obviously, there’s still a slim chance he could pull through... But, we wanted to let everyone know where we’re at that way if they had any intention of visiting they would know they should do it now and not wait.

Please continue to pray.

UPDATE (1-19-19):

Bill Douglas passed away around 4:21am this morning. Bill fought a good battle, but took a turn for the worst the past couple days ago. His family will need our prayers and they have requested a tow truck funeral. We will update you on the arrangements once they are made...

Update:

I don’t even know what to say, because I’ve been very blessed to have never been in a situation like the one I am in now... I guess a little update for everyone. Bill was in a wreck this morning around 12:18-12:25, he was on a very windy back road (with the rain and wind being like it was) and somehow he ended up running off the road and into a tree. He was taken to RMC in Anniston and they transported him via ambulance to UAB in Birmingham where he is in NICU now. All we know at this point is that he has been very banged up and looks a little rough, has some broken ribs on both sides, and has a bleed in his brain. The neurologist said they are trying to be aggressive because at this point things are kind of up in the air and they just need to stay on top of everything. He is on a vent but breathing some on his own still, and they have placed an internal pressure monitor in his head to monitor the pressure on his brain because that is one of their chief concerns.

At this point all prayers are appreciated but please be respectful of the fact that this is very hard on everyone and we’re trying to stay strong for the girls so sitting and talking with everyone isn’t feasible right now.

Bill had a lot of friends and family all over, so I know if we all come together and pray he can pull through this with a full recovery. Thank you in advance for your prayers and well wishes. ❤️

Please have everyone stop a say a word of pray for our friend Bill Douglas. He is a driver for Aban Towing out of Hoover, AL.
Just after midnight, Bill was involved in a accident when his wrecker left the roadway on AL Hwy 9 outside of Heflin, AL and struck a tree. He is currently at UAB Birmingham and on a ventilator with severe head injuries.

As a customer, should you need a tow, lockout, tire change, jump start, or winch out, would you be interested in using a text based service, (ex. Text "Tow" to 12345) that would then allow you to enter your location and vehicle information to be sent straight to us?

Sheriff’s Office stressing move over law after two patrol cars hit in one night

There are two issues here.
First one being DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!! We received criticism from some other wrecker companies about our offer for $25 Tipsy Tows, for various reasons. However, if these two drivers had taken advantage of that offer, this wouldn't have happened. There is a reason we make those offers.
Second,
MOVE OVER! We don't know what it's gonna take to get people to understand that. When you see flashing lights on the side of the road, regardless of red, blue or amber, SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER.
These two vehicles were hit in our own backyard. On Hwy 280, where we work every single day. Do you know what it's like to have to go to work and every time you go out to do your job you have to wonder if you're gonna survive it???? It's a scary feeling. Our operators are going out to help someone and could get killed for it because people are too distracted or too selfish to consider the safety of others first.
PUT THE PHONES DOWN. PUT YOUR MAKEUP ON BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE. PUT DOWN WHATEVER ELSE YOU'RE CONCENTRATING ON BESIDES THE ROAD. SLOW DOWN, PAY ATTENTION, AND MOVE OVER FOR STOPPED EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
It's not a hard concept at all.

Two Shelby County deputies had a close call working a traffic scene on Highway 280. The traffic call ended in four wrecks because drivers didn’t follow the law.
