A huge shout out to Cole Cochran for his answering the call and being such a great local resource!

When we put out a plea for help splicing some Amsteel line for the Llama Boat (a very specialized skill), Cole got ahold of us within 45 minutes with an offer to help.

Here’s a picture of this awesome guy with his final product for us!

Thank you Cole, and thank you Chelan Valley Bulletin!! Although Cole is a Llama Boat Facebook follower, he saw the request first on the Bulletin!

*Llama boat out of service for maintenance*

As sometimes happens with machinery, the llama boat suffered an engine issue while underway. We were able to slowly get back to 25 Mile Creek safely.

After a day of attempts to fix it, we reluctantly have had to admit defeat and have the boat brought to a mechanic for further diagnostics and repair.

When everything is up and running, we will certainly get back to posting daily updates!

Today we said goodbye to our Blackhills team. We arrived at Corral Creek (easy to find, as that’s where the smoke is still passing through), where they had everything neatly packed up to go. Along with Marine 1, we shuttled all personnel and equipment back to 25 Mile Creek. Blackhills headed back to Entiat to do all that administrative demobilization stuff and then they were hitting the road for a day and a half to get back home. We hear the new hot shot crew should be here in a couple days.

There is a new overhead team on this fire as of today. Our new supervisor came down to introduce himself and gather information on all boats. We certainly look forward to working with him. 

We also found out that we would be communicating on a new frequency. The Llama Boat does carry its own radio, but we do not program or as they say, clone, the radio ourselves.

Luckily we were fortunate enough to have Chief Asher of Chelan stop by to check on his crews and at the some time, the Interim Manson Chief, Chief Williams! With their expertise, they had our radio all set to go in no time. Thanks, Chiefs! Collaboration at its finest and much appreciated!

The rest of the day we stayed at 25 Mile Creek standing by. Important work, but nothing came up that needed to be dealt with. So we actually got to sit and have lunch. Here’s our provided lunch of the day!

We got an early start on the day today on request of the Blackhills team. We were there before 8 o’clock, and picked up four individuals to go up to be lookout for the fire still remaining above Safety Harbor. We then took another crew to do what appears to be a daily check on a little big Creek cabin and then ran back to corral Creek.

Shorly thereafter, we were quite pleased to see that a couple of helicopters took advantage of the break in the smoke to come and dump probably 10 buckets of water on that fire area still remaining above Safety Harbor! It was great timing because the smoke set in again for the afternoon.

The fire up there has continuously progressing towards Corral Creek Campground (and their camp). They decided that some interventions were finally necessary.

Through lines dug, and a little use of special flares guns and drop torching, they carefully manicured the hillside so the fire passed through, but completely missed the campground area. It was quite amazing to watch.

We have concluded that the Blackhills team from South Dakota is the Chuck Norris of the wildland firefighting arena. “They do not fear Fire, Fire fears them.” The fact that Corral Creek campground is still here is a testament to them!

Heading back into 25 Mile Creek, a heavy wind that had hit us at Corral Creek just disappeared around Little Big Creek. I had a feeling that it would hit down lake later on… And as I finally post this hours later, I believe it has.

A quick post on fire movement along the lake on the South Shore as viewed from the water.

Here are two online map screenshots-one showing a dot when we were adjacent to the fire last night coming home (25 Mile Creek State Park says “parking/mixed parking”).

The next one is a dot adjacent to the fire as we were leaving this morning. Yes, it has moved closer to 25 Mile Creek, but still aways away. We are pretty sure each square length is a mile.

When we passed thus morning, there was flame but it was moving very , very slowly. The water was a little rough so we could not get a photo.

It’s an active night.

Putting the first video up now. Fire coming down Grouse Mountain. That’s the Llama Boat in front, parked at 25 Mile Creek State Park.

The Llama Boat transported some crew members around to Safety Harbor and also to check once again on the cabin at Little Big Creek. After that point, we stayed at Coral Creek with the Blackhills crew assessing weather change and fire start to build up.

As the day went on, wind started to pick up, you could feel the change in the temperature of the air and fire activity picked up. There was a call for some air support to try and put some water on that fire way back behind safety Harbor, but unfortunately sunset came too soon.

We got some photos of fire movement today around Corral Creek. You can see the fire whirl in a previous post. While coming into 25 Mile Creek, we witnessed the beginning of the fire at the top of what appeared to be Grouse Mountain.

I think it might be a long night. We’ll be at it very early tomorrow morning.

Taken about 10 minutes ago at Corral Creek.

About 15 to 20 seconds beforehand, it sounded like there was an aircraft somewhere or a very large boat approaching us… Then we realized it was this. I caught it in about halfway through.
