On August 20, 1902, Henry Ford and Alexander Malcomson signed the agreement that established their partnership to develop and market a new automobile. That partnership eventually became Ford & Malcomson Company, the direct predecessor to Ford Motor Company.

This day in FORD history .

On August 19, 1899, Henry Ford resigned from the Edison Illuminating Company and, with several associates, organized the Detroit Automobile Company. It ultimately failed about 18 months later — but it was an important stepping stone toward Ford Motor Company.
