The seat in this car was redrawn five times across fourteen model years. A pleated bucket for 1967. An integrated headrest design for 1969. A shape used for 1970 and never again. The smooth back the hobby calls the horse collar, running 1973 through 1977. And the deluxe high back that carried the car to the end in 1981. Each change followed something else: federal head restraint rules, a new body, a new interior package.

The 1972 Trans Am total of 1,286 cars is a labor figure rather than a demand figure. Norwood Assembly in Ohio built the Firebird and Camaro on a shared line and was the only plant doing so. UAW Local 674 struck the plant on 3 April 1972 over line speed and working conditions, and the walkout ran 174 days into September. Around 1,100 cars still on the line when it ended could not be brought up to the 1973 federal five mile per hour bumper standard and were scrapped where they sat. General Motors gave serious consideration to cancelling the Firebird outright at that point.

The 1980 Turbo Trans Am wasn't just another special edition. Under the Y85
option, with the turbocharged 301 as standard equipment, Pontiac built
roughly 5,700 of these for the Indy Pace Car edition. It became the first
Trans Am design to pace both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in
the same year.

By 1981, the last year of the second generation body, WS6 had grown into a tighter system. A bigger front sway bar, a 14 to 1 steering box for quicker response, the same 15x8 snowflake wheels and GR70-15 tires, and a power steering cooler added just to keep the sharper steering box from overheating under real use. The Pontiac 428 shares its large journal crankshaft design directly with the 421 it replaced, cast from Nodular Iron rather than the 421's Armasteel and identified by an N cast into the counterweight for anybody checking. Externally the block is the same physical size as every other Pontiac V8 built that era, with the later 301 being the only real exception to that rule. It was built exclusively for Pontiac's full size cars, specifically the Bonneville, the Catalina and the Grand Prix, and it never once left the factory installed in a GTO or a Firebird.

Trans Am trivia: what Trans Am engine came standard in 1971 and 1972, known for round exhaust ports and a dual-snorkel air cleaner?

The first Trans Am ever built, 1969, came standard with 3.55 rear gears. Not an option buyers had to seek out, not an upgrade tied to the biggest engine. Every WS4 package Trans Am that left the factory that first year was already geared for it before a single owner ever asked. Save this for the next cars and coffee.

The WS6 package picked up four wheel disc brakes in 1979, one year after it debuted. The same 15x8 snowflake wheels carried over from the year before. 1979 is the first year WS6 could stop as hard as it could turn.

An open rear differential sends all its power to whichever rear tire has the least grip. Under hard acceleration that means one tire spinning while the other barely turns. A limited slip differential, what Pontiac called Safe T Track, splits that power between both wheels instead, the difference between a one tire burnout and a real two tire launch. Fewer than half of all Firebirds built in 1977 actually had it. Save this for the next cars and coffee.
