Update 6/22: The approximately 200 available steering wheel locks will be available on a first come, first served basis. A reminder that proof of residency in Champaign and proof of ownership of an affected vehicle are required to receive a lock.

To combat vehicle thefts related to a social media trend, Champaign Police will offer free steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners living in Champaign. Affected vehicles include Kia vehicles manufactured 2011-'21 and Hyundai vehicles from 2013-'21.

Steering wheel locks will be available at a special event being held on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 10am to noon in the North Parking Lot at the Champaign Police Department, 82 E. University Ave., near First & University. Proof of residency in Champaign and proof of ownership of an affected vehicle are required to receive a lock.
