Sammy is our 1967 Caprice Sport Sedan that we've owned since June of 2008. We found him in Rochester, NY, via ebay, and we snagged him for $2500, and trailered him home, which at the time was NE Ohio. We've been fans of SUPERNATURAL since the very first season, and we knew early on that we'd have to have an Impala just like 'Baby' on the show. Sammy started out as a rather heavily-optioned Caprice, Capri Cream with a black vinyl top and gold interior. He came off the line with the 327 4-barrel rated at 275 HP mated to a specially ordered TH 400 3-speed. He also has AC, Power Brakes and Steering, plus front speakers and a rear window defogger. He'd clocked over 112,000 miles in 31 years. We have the original GM Protecto-Plate, confirming that Sammy retained his original drivetrain. Decoding of his cowl tag indicates Sammy rolled off the assembly line in Janesville, WI (the same plant as Baby!) the second week of July, 1967. He was number 192,323 off the line that year at Janesville, and number 9,275 of Caprices produced. Definitely one of the last '67s to roll off the line before re-tooling for 1968. Sammy was delivered to The Tyler Auto Company of Tyler, MN on August 25, 1967. His first owner took possession of him on September 3, 1967, with a second owner a couple years later. As far as we can tell, Sammy spent 29 years in Tyler. We're pretty sure he was in 'storage' from 1992 though 2006, surfacing in Brookings, ND before ending up in Rochester. So it seems we're Sammy's fifth owners, though owners 3 & 4 kept him just long enough to sell him again. I grew up with Chevy Impalas around; my dear Auntie had a '63 Impala 4-door hardtop (the first car I 'drove'. I was four. It's a story), and then a '66 Impala Supersport. I spent many years in those Chevys, so I guess something rubbed off. My first car was a '71 Impala. Later, I had a '72 Caprice. (And a few Chevelles and Malibu Classics). At the time we found Sammy, we also had a '72 Impala Convertible. So what was one more Chevy? To say we're 'car guys' would be partly accurate; we love older, '60's & '70's cars though we're not mechanics nor bodymen. We've gotten our hands dirty and tackled relatively daunting projects, with varying degrees of success. Luckily for us, we had a great mechanic in NE Ohio who also happened to be a Chevy nut, so for the first year we were able to accomplish quite a lot, mostly the mundane necessities like brakes and exhaust and suspension. Sammy was always a running, driving car, so it was always fun to roll him out of the garage for a jaunt to Wal-Mart. Everything ground to a halt early in 2009, as real-life events conspired to throw our lives into a tailspin. The Recession, the Housing Bubble - whatever it all was, we, like hundreds of thousands of other folks, lost pretty much everything we'd spent the last decade working for. We had to let a lot go, but one thing we kept was Sammy. We landed in SW Florida in November of 2011, and though Sammy was safe and secure in our garage, we didn't have a penny to spare to work on him. We kept our heads down and slogged away, and soon enough we were able to start saving, not only for necessities, but for Sammy as well. By July of 2016, we'd socked away enough to rebuild Sammy's drivetrain. We'd developed a good relationship with a small local garage who specialized in old muscle cars on the side, and by August, Sammy's original 327 and TH400 were better than new. By March of 2017, we’d done all that we could do with Sammy ourselves, so we contacted Rick Blevins, and in July, Sammy shipped out to The Shop in Garnett, Kansas for his ultimate conversion into a screen accurate Supernatural Impala.
When Spring of 2019 rolled around, Rick let us know Sammy was pretty much done, and we drove on out to Garnett to pick him up. Pictures and videos don’t do The Shop’s work justice at all; our Sammy is one gorgeous Supernatural Impala!
We were lucky enough to be with friends and SPN Family when we picked up our boy, and we all drove down to Austin, Texas for a gathering of even more Impalas and Family, culminating in a visit to The Family Business Brewery in Dripping Springs. To make an amazing Road Trip even more awesome, Jensen Ackles himself happened to be there and took the time to check out Sammy, but every other Impala (and one Gremiln) as well.
One of the best days ever!
