Here's another one from the recent workload. 🔧

This Buick Encore needed several things taken care of, so we knocked them all out during the same visit.

🔧 Alternator replacement
🔧 New serpentine belt
🔧 Front brake service

Charging system taken care of, fresh belt installed, brakes handled, and another customer back on the road.

One of the things I love about being mobile is being able to come directly to the customer and handle multiple repairs right where the vehicle sits.

No tow truck. No waiting room. No arranging a ride back from the shop.

Just getting the work done and keeping Kentucky moving. 🔧

⚠️ THIS is one you don't ignore.

This customer noticed a strong rotten-egg/sulfur smell coming from their vehicle.

When I arrived, the battery was hissing, off-gassing, swollen, and EXTREMELY hot.

Using an infrared thermometer, I measured the battery case at roughly 150°F. 🌡️

At that point, I wasn't about to immediately put my hands on it and start removing it.

I monitored the battery from a safe distance and watched the temperature until it consistently began coming down and the battery had stabilized enough to safely proceed.

Once it was safe, I removed the failed battery, sourced a replacement, installed it, checked the charging system, and had the customer taken care of the same day.

This one is worth remembering:

If you ever notice a strong rotten-egg/sulfur smell, hissing, swelling, or excessive heat around your battery, DON'T ignore it.

A failing lead-acid battery can release hydrogen gas, which is flammable, and a severely overheated battery can become dangerous very quickly.

And from the mechanic side, this is exactly why having the right tools matters.

That little infrared thermometer allowed me to monitor the battery's temperature without touching it or guessing about what was happening.

Sometimes the cheapest option is paying a professional in the first place. 🔧

I was called out late at night for this Toyota Camry Hybrid that wouldn't enter READY. Unfortunately, the 12V battery had failed to the point that I couldn't properly diagnose the vehicle that night.

I returned the next day, installed the new 12V battery, and it still wouldn't enter READY.

After a couple hours of thorough diagnostics, including scanning the different modules and monitoring live data, I kept coming back to a fault involving the high-voltage safety interlock circuit.

That's when the customer explained that they had been talking with someone through an app and had been advised to disconnect the high-voltage battery safety system without following the proper procedure.

There now appeared to be an issue within that circuit requiring further high-voltage diagnosis.

I don't perform high-voltage battery repairs, so I gave the customer everything I had found and recommended taking it to a shop equipped for that work. Hopefully, having the problem narrowed down will save them from paying someone else to start the entire diagnostic process from square one.

AI, apps, forums, and videos can be great tools. But sometimes trying to save a diagnostic fee can turn into a much more expensive problem.

Especially when high voltage is involved, it never hurts to call a professional before disconnecting something you're unsure about. ⚡🔧

Here's another one that kept me busy recently. 🔧

This 2002 Honda CR-V had the customer dealing with heavy white smoke/steam and an overheating engine.

Once I came out and started looking into it, I found a completely shredded serpentine belt, a failed and leaking radiator, and a damaged radiator cap.

We replaced the radiator, radiator cap, and serpentine belt.

While everything was already apart, I also talked with the customer about the original thermostat/housing assembly.

It hadn't failed, but with everything already opened up, replacing it now was going to be considerably easier and cheaper than waiting for the original one to fail later and having to go back into the cooling system again.

The customer agreed, so we went ahead and replaced it as preventive maintenance while we already had the access.

Sometimes saving someone money isn't necessarily about doing the absolute minimum today. It's about giving them the information and letting them decide whether taking care of something now could save them another repair bill later.

Once everything was back together, the cooling system was properly refilled and thoroughly bled, temperatures were monitored, and everything was checked before handing the vehicle back over.

Customer back on the road. 🔧

Here's a good reminder that brakes usually don't get cheaper when you wait. ⚠️

This Ford Explorer was actually scheduled with me for brake work a few months ago. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the customer wasn't able to have the work done at the time and had to cancel.

Fast-forward a few months and I got another call.

This time the brakes were making an absolutely terrible noise.

I came out, inspected everything, and found that one of the rear rotors had gotten to the point that it was completely destroyed.

At that point, the customer opted to replace both rear rotors and take care of the brake issue properly.

I completely understand that life happens and repairs sometimes have to wait. But when it comes to brakes, please don't ignore the warning signs any longer than you absolutely have to.

Grinding, scraping, vibration, reduced braking performance, or a sudden change in the way the pedal feels deserves attention.

Your brakes aren't just another maintenance item. They're one of the most important safety systems on the vehicle.

This is exactly the kind of situation mobile repair was made for. 🔧

This customer was at a football game at South Warren when his Jeep suddenly wouldn't shift and left him stranded.

I came out and found that the shifter cable had disconnected from the transmission because the transmission-side bushing had failed.

Tiny part. Big problem. 😂

Something like this can immediately make you think you're dealing with a major transmission failure, when the actual problem is much smaller.

That's why we diagnose before we start throwing parts at something.

And when your vehicle decides to break down in the middle of a football game, it certainly doesn't hurt when the mechanic comes to YOU. 🔧

When I mentioned being pretty “slammed” lately, this was one of the jobs I was talking about. 🔧

This Honda Civic had a failed alternator, but simply replacing the alternator wouldn't have been much of a repair.

Once I got into it, I found the alternator was completely soaked in engine oil. Alternators aren't exactly designed to take an oil bath. 😂

The valve cover gasket was leaking badly enough to cover the alternator in oil, which likely contributed to its premature failure. The belt tensioner had also failed.

I explained everything I found to the customer and gave her the options. She decided to take care of it properly, so we replaced the alternator, valve cover gasket, and failed tensioner.

That's a big part of how I try to run SoKY Pit Stop. It's not about finding the biggest repair bill possible. It's about giving you ALL the information I have, explaining what can happen if something isn't addressed, and letting YOU decide what makes the most sense for your situation.

And I have to give this customer a shout-out. She was incredibly understanding, appreciative, and just let me come out and do my job.

I appreciated that enough that I went ahead and bought her a new serpentine belt and installed it at no charge. Just a small way to return some of that appreciation.

And yes... that picture is me working under a canopy in the rain. 😂🌧️

A little Kentucky weather doesn't mean the wrenches have to stop turning.

To this customer and everyone else who continues trusting me with their vehicles, THANK YOU. You guys are the reason I get to stay “slammed.”

This one actually started a few weeks before I ever got the service call.

I happened to see this 2002 Volvo broken down on the side of the road and stopped to see if I could help. The owner thought the transmission had gone out, so I gave him my card and told him to give me a call if he needed me.

A few weeks later, he did.

When I came out, transmission fluid was pouring out around the axle and it initially appeared that the axle seal had failed. The axle itself also needed replacement, so we planned to take care of both.

Once I removed the axle, though, we found the real extent of the damage.

The axle failure had damaged the bearing and actually cracked the transmission housing.

Talking with the customer afterward, he mentioned that he had been hearing noises from that side of the vehicle while turning.

Unfortunately, what might have started as a smaller problem had now become a transmission replacement.

That's why I always say maintenance and early repairs will almost always be cheaper than waiting for something to completely fail.

That noise your vehicle has been making might not seem urgent today, but ignoring it can turn a smaller repair into a MUCH bigger one tomorrow.

The customer has decided to move forward with a used transmission, so we'll hopefully have this Volvo back on the road soon. 🔧

Another recent diagnostic and another customer back on the road. 🔧

This Kia Soul was having an accelerator pedal issue that would put the vehicle into limp mode and set code P2127.

Rather than assuming the code automatically meant a certain part needed to be replaced, I continued diagnosing the problem and found that the sensor inside the accelerator pedal would intermittently drop out and trigger the issue.

An OEM replacement pedal was ordered directly from Kia, installed, and the repair was verified.

Problem found. Problem fixed. Customer back on the road.
